Class 4A

Fort Wayne Wayne 28, Franklin County 8

Making its second appearance in the IHSAA Football State Finals, Fort Wayne Wayne (12-2) broken open a 7-0 game by intercepting two Franklin County passes and converting them into two touchdowns in less than two minutes midway through the third quarter.

Senior quarterback and defensive back Darnell LoVett scored three touchdowns -- two on one-yard runs and the other on a 50-yard interception return -- to lead the seventh-ranked Generals. Senior running back Quavis Tate carried the ball 29 times for 138 yards and a touchdown. Tate finished the season with 2,212 rushing yards, ranking him third for the 1995 season among all Indiana players.

Sixth-ranked Franklin County (12-2), making its first appearance in the IHSAA Football State Finals, fought gamely after losing senior quarterback Wes Gillman to a serious knee injury late in the first quarter. Gillman completed his only pass attempt.

The Executive Committee selected Wes Gillman of Franklin County as the 1995 recipient of the Phil N. Eskew Award for Mental Attitude in Class 4A Football. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor of all IHSAA tournaments, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Franklin County High School in Gillman's name.
