1995 State Football Title Winner

Making its second appearance in the IHSAA Football State Finals,
Fort Wayne Wayne (12-2) broken open a 7-0 game by intercepting
two Franklin County passes and converting them into two touchdowns
in less than two minutes midway through the third quarter.
Senior quarterback and defensive back Darnell LoVett scored three
touchdowns -- two on one-yard runs and the other on a 50-yard
interception return -- to lead the seventh-ranked Generals. Senior
running back Quavis Tate carried the ball 29 times for 138 yards
and a touchdown. Tate finished the season with 2,212 rushing yards,
ranking him third for the 1995 season among all Indiana players.
Sixth-ranked Franklin County (12-2), making its first appearance
in the IHSAA Football State Finals, fought gamely after losing
senior quarterback Wes Gillman to a serious knee injury late in
the first quarter. Gillman completed his only pass attempt.
The Executive Committee selected Wes Gillman of Franklin County
as the 1995 recipient of the Phil N. Eskew Award for Mental Attitude
in Class 4A Football. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor
of all IHSAA tournaments, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Franklin
County High School in Gillman's name.
