State Finals Summary
Reeling off a record number of points and the
widest margin of victory ever in the state meet, the
The top-ranked Greyhounds, coached by Ken Stopkotte, won half of the events -- three individuals and
all three relays – for their 10th state championship overall and
gave the school a sweep of the sports’ state championships for the third year
in a row as well. The
Wieczorek would add his third and
fourth state championship medals of the day by winning the 100 butterfly and
teaming to win the 200 freestyle relay.

No records were set in the state meet this year but
other good stories were evident.
Western senior Ted Brown finished first in a pair
of events winning the 200 individual medley in 1:51.92
and the 500 freestyle in 4:35.97 for the first state championships of his
career. He finished second in the 500 free one year ago.
Also of note was the performance of senior Corey
Cole of Indianapolis Arsenal Technical in one meter diving. Cole scored 466.55
points in his 11 dives to win the competition and become the first swimmer from
his school to win a title at this meet and the first from an

And finally, following a runner-up finish in the
100 breaststroke a year ago, Hamilton Southeastern senior Daniel Walter
returned to win it all this time around in :56.74 and Yorktown senior Kyle Ruth
took top honors in the 50 freestyle in :20.67. Ruth is the first swimmer from
his school to win a state swimming championship.
Following the state meet, Ted Brown of

and 500 freestyle to win the first championship medals of his high school

Assistant Commissioner who served the association from 1961-73, is awarded annually
to a senior who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and
athletic ability in the state meet.
