North
Central Wins First Title Since 1983, Miller and Schmitt
Double Winners
North
Central of Indianapolis won its second IHSAA championship overall and its first
since 1983 by out-distancing runner-up Penn at the 68th Annual
Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals
at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis on Saturday. North Central ended Carmel’s four-year run as
state champions.
Coach Mark
Hesse’s Panthers put an exclamation point on their team title by winning the
meet’s final event, the 400 freestyle relay.
The tandem of Drew Sease, Peter Jameson, Riley Boulden, and Michael
Christy was victorious in 3:06.18. North
Central scored 221 points in the meet to 187 for second-place Penn. The second-place effort was the highest ever
for coach Dan Vogelgesang’s Kingsmen.
Northridge
senior Arthur Miller won two individual events and one relay title with an
outstanding day. Miller led from start
to finish in winning the 100 backstroke (50.79) and the 200 individual medley (1:48.76). He
defeated defending champion Michael Christy of North Central (1:50.30) in the
200 IM. Top-seeded Northridge opened the
meet with its first-ever relay state championship by
winning the 200 medley relay. The tandem
of Miller, Spenser Hanson, Bill Griffin, and Kevin Troyer prevailed in
1:34.93. Miller’s standout performance
led coach Joe Keller’s Raiders to third place in the
final team standings. Keller was voted
the “Coach of the Year” by his peers.
Evansville
Reitz senior John Schmitt was a double winner in the 100 and 200
freestyle. In the 100, the second-seeded
Schmitt edged finals top seed Peter Jameson of North Central for the
victory. Schmitt won in 45.75, while
Jameson finished in 46.04. Schmitt took
a slight lead midway through the 200 freestyle and hung on to edge North
Central’s Drew Sease and Jameson for the victory. Schmitt won in 1:39.25, nipping leading
qualifier Sease (1:39.41) and Jameson (1:39.49).
Center
Grove junior Chris Oleksiak dominated the 500 freestyle, winning by almost four
seconds to become the school’s first boys’ swimming individual state
champion. Oleksiak won in 4:31.69, with
Sease second (4:35.56) and defending champion Sebastian Cousins of Carmel third
in 4:38.84. Oleksiak’s effort helped
Center Grove to fifth place in the final team standings.
South Bend
Riley senior David Caldini upheld his top seed in the 50 freestyle with a tight
victory. Caldini was victorious in 21.24
to become his school’s first champion in that event since 1962. Riley finished seventh in the team standings.
Noblesville

one-meter diving event and kept it with a solid final dive, finishing with
465.60 points. Munster senior Justin
Smith was second (458.80), while defending champion Caleb Dunnichay of Elwood
placed third (441.00).
