BOONVILLE WINS SCHOOL’S FIRST STATE TITLE

Scoring all the runs it would need in the first two innings, Boonville (32-2) defeated New Prairie, 5-0, to claim the Class 3A state championship in Indianapolis.

It was the first state championship in school history and came in the Pioneers’ seventh trip to the state finals.

In the first inning, seniors Ashley Snodgrass and Kelli Ritchison scored the first runs for Boonville after a fly ball hit by Dana Martin was dropped in centerfield.  The Pioneers added another score in the inning when pinch runner Mallory Trice was plated on Lynn Fletcher’s single to left field.

In the second inning, Boonville scored two more on a Kelli Ritchison bases-loaded walk and followed with a Martin single up the middle.

It was the fifth shutout in six state tournament games for Boonville which outscored its opponents 30-1. The only run allowed came during the regional championship game last weekend.

Boonville’s Erika Taylor struck out 10 and only allowed two hits in the game. The Pioneers were coached by 21st year leader Mike Wilson. New Prairie (31-4), making its first appearance in the state finals, was coached by Tim Scott.

Boonville’s Lynn Fletcher named Mental Attitude Award winner

Lynn Fletcher of Boonville High School was named the winner of the Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee for Class 3A softball.

Fletcher finished as the class valedictorian and will attend Purdue University to study pharmacy. She served as class president all four years and was a member of the National Honor Society as a junior and senior. She also was involved in the Key Club, the Student Council and the school’s Academic Team.

In addition to being a four-year letterwinner in softball, Fletcher also played soccer all four years and was named Offensive MVP as a junior and senior.

She is the daughter of Skip and Jill Fletcher of Chandler.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Boonville High School in the name of Fletcher.
