2002-03 IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State
Tournament Series
State Finals Summary
Late Points Secure Carmel’s 17th Consecutive State
Championship
Though the Greyhounds trailed by three points
heading into the second to last event -- the 100 breaststroke -- the fact that
current leader North Central of Indianapolis didn’t have a participant in the
event proved to be a deciding factor.
The Greyhounds grabbed the lead right off the bat
winning the 200 medley relay in 1:47.27. It was the 16th time in the
last 17 years
Two records fell during the meet, including the
oldest mark on the chart.
North Central senior Julie Broms
scored 477.00 points in winning the one meter diving competition and bettered
the long-standing mark of 473.30 set by Dana Wiegand
of
Robinson also defended her 50 freestyle crown from
a year ago finishing first in :23.15, which was .08
faster than her winning time of 2002. She ends her high school career with six
championship medals, including the 100 freestyle as a freshman in 2000.
In addition to Robinson, two others – North
Central’s Susan Hentschel and Columbus North’s Leah Retrum
-- won two events a piece.
Retrum won the 500 freestyle for
the fourth consecutive year, just the second individual to accomplish the feat
in that event. Retrum clocked in just .05 of a second
off her state meet record of last year in 4:46.13. Earlier in the meet, she won
her third consecutive crown in the 200 individual medley
in 2:01.50. All told, she finishes her career with eight state titles,
including a 200 medley relay win in 2001.
Hentschel, a senior, won perhaps the most exciting
event of the day edging
Fort Wayne Snider senior Erin Morris also returned
to win the 100 backstroke for the second straight year completing the course in :55.32.
Following the meet, Robinson was named winner of
the 2003 IHSAA Girls Swimming Mental Attitude Award by the IHSAA Executive
Committee. The annual award is presented to the outstanding senior in the state
finals competition. The recipient, who
was nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude,
scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in swimming and diving.
Robinson is the daughter of Dr. Harley and Jascia Robinson of Dillsboro.
Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate sponsor,
presented a $1,000.00 scholarship check to
A total of 3,539 athletes from 230 schools began
competition at the sectional level.
