WELCHERS, MARTZOLF WIN
INDIVIDUAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Megan
Martzolf of Park Tudor won her second state singles title in three years and
Tiffany and Deahna Welcher of
The
Welchers defeated Valparaiso’s Lauren Prow and Christina Rodich, 6-3,
6-4, to become the second sister tandem to win the doubles title and first
since Nancy and Sandra Gyorgyi of South Bend Adams in 1978. For Tiffany, a
senior, she becomes the first girl to win both a singles and doubles crown during
her prep career and just the second individual to do so, girl or boy. She won
the singles tournament a year ago after finishing as the runner-up in 2005.
This year, she opted to play doubles with Deahna, a freshman, and, together,
they ran off eight consecutive tournament victories to finish the year 16-0.
In Saturday
morning’s semifinals, Tiffany and Deahna advanced with a 6-1, 6-3,
victory over Park Tudor’s Elizabeth Emhardt and Heather Rogers.
Martzolf won
a straight set match from Columbus North freshman Caroline Hedrick, 6-1, 6-0, in
the final for her 10th consecutive tournament win and her second
championship in three years. She finishes the 2007 season 24-2 overall a week
after helping her school capture its third consecutive team state championship.
Megan beat
Lauren Delaney of Franklin Central on Saturday morning, 6-1, 6-1, to earn her
spot in the final match. She is the younger sister of Katie Martzolf, who won
four state singles championships from 1998 to 2001.
