2001 IHSAA GIRLS TRACK & FIELD STATE FINALS
Fort
Wayne Northrop withstood a challenge from
Coached by Ted Knudson, the Bruins clinched their fourth
IHSAA girls track & field with a third-place finish in the meet’s final
event, the 1600 meter relay.
The
meet was conducted under difficult conditions – intermittent rain, gusty winds
and falling temperatures that reached 49 degrees at the end of the competition.
Estimated attendance was 4,500.
Still,
two teams bettered a venerable state meet record in the 400 meter relay, with
Fort Wayne Northrop taking the title in 47.62. The Bruins were followed by North
Central (
There
were no other state meet records set and there were no repeat individual
champions.
Junior Ashley Urick clocked in 4:58.51 and freshman Katie
Harrington followed in 4:59.30 in the 1600 meters as
Delta
sophomore Christina Poulson became the first athlete
from her school to win an IHSAA track and field state title when she cruised to
a decisive victory in the 100 meters with an 11.93 clocking. Poulson also took
seventh in the 200 meters.
Poulson
was joined by four other athletes – senior Emily Loomis of Fort Wayne Bishop
Luers, senior Christen Hanley of Zionsville, senior Whittney Stuart of Fort
Wayne North Side, and sophomore Tiffany Redlarczyk of
Loomis
captured the high jump in 5-9.5 after finishing in the event in 2000 and
seventh in 1999. Hanley’s 145-0 effort in the discus topped Andrea Dalla Rossa of
Redlarczyk
blazed to a six-second victory in the 3200 meters, while Stuart claimed the 200
meters after finishing third in the 100 meters.

Katie Dyer of
· Senior Michelle Smith of Bloomington North won the long jump in 19-7.5. Smith, who finished third in the 2000 state meet, posted the best winning effort in the state meet since 1995.

Freshman Temeka Kincy took the 400 meters in
57.06, followed by classmates Zakiya Robinson of

LOOMIS NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD RECIPIENT
Emily Loomis of
A three-sport athlete and an all-state performer in all three, Loomis was a four-time state finalist in track and field as a high jumper. She also started three years on the school’s Class 2A girls basketball state champions. In 2001, Fort Wayne Luers became the first team to win three straight IHSAA girls basketball titles.
Academically, she ranked seventh in her graduating class of 127 students and is a member of the National Honor Society. She will attend the University of Notre Dame on a volleyball scholarship and plans to major in business.
The
Mental Attitude Award is presented annually to the senior who best demonstrates
excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in girls track and field. Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA
corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to
