MORRISTOWN CAPTURES FIRST STATE TITLE IN SCHOOL HISTORY
In its
first appearance in the state championship match, Morristown High School took
home its first-ever volleyball crown with an impressive 21-15, 21-14, 21-11
victory over No. 1 ranked Michigan City Marquette in the Class A championship
match on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at Hinkle Fieldhouse
in Indianapolis.
Morristown jumped out early and simply gave
the Blazers no breathing room the rest of the way. For the third-ranked Yellow
Jackets (36-3), it also marked the school’s first state championship in any
sport.
Morristown went to its big gun early and often
as senior Kayla Tarrh, connected on 24 of her 40 kill
attempts to lead the way for coach Rita Rouse’s team. Setter Emily Prifogle
contributed 30 assists for the match and Megan Stout tallied 14 digs on
defense.
Marquette (35-4), the 2002 state runner-up
and making its fifth consecutive appearance in the state championship match,
was led on offense by senior Colette Hausoul and
sophomore Michelle Fletcher with nine and eight kills, respectively.
A school of
285 students in Shelby County, the state champs found their way
into the title match after a 21-14, 19-21, 21-4, 21-13 semifinals triumph over
Tecumseh dropping the only game in their seven tournament contests. The
Michigan City team earned a 19-21, 23-21, 21-15, 21-13 victory over
second-ranked Cowan in the semifinals. They were guided by first year coach
Troy Campbell.
