Burris was taken to a deciding fifth game but, as has been the case in Class 2A
for the last seven years, the second-ranked Owls proved to be the class of the
field in the championship match at Hinkle Fieldhouse
on
With its
24-25, 21-11, 15-21, 21-15, 15-6 victory over sixth-ranked Brownstown Central,
the Owls collected their seventh straight crown and 15th overall in
the school’s illustrious volleyball history. All have come under the leadership
of Steve Shondell, the state’s winningest
coach.
Brownstown
Central (30-8), determined to claim its first volleyball championship, gave
Burris all it could handle though by winning two games in the match. In the
seven previous years, Burris hadn’t lost an individual game in a championship
outing. It was the fourth matchup for all the marbles
between the teams since 1998, including last year’s three-game affair.
Freshman
Caitlyn Vann led the Owls with 14 kills, while Brittany Fullhart
and Jill MacMillan added 13 each. Kappy
Lang recorded 43 assists as the Owls setter. On defense, Hana
Ros chalked up 16 digs. The Braves were led on offense
by Whitney McCory with 21 kills for the match. Five
different Brownstown players added double-digit digs led by Jessica Smith’s 13.
Burris
advanced to the final game with a four-game win over third-ranked Adams
Central, 19-21, 21-18, 21-15, 21-14. Brownstown Central, meanwhile, swept
unranked
Natalie Young of
Natalie
Young of
Natalie
has been a lettering member of the varsity volleyball team all four years and,
this season, served as co-captain. She
received All-Conference honors for three years in the Allen County Athletic
Conference, as well as the Jet Award as a Junior. This year, she led the team in kills.
In
addition to her participation in volleyball, Natalie lettered three seasons on
the basketball court, earning ACAC All-Conference honors for two seasons and
was team MVP as Junior. She is a member
of the Adams Central 1,000 Point Club.
She also lettered three seasons as a player on the softball squad, again
capturing ACAC All-Conference accolades.
Academically,
Natalie ranks 24th in her Senior class,
while carrying a full college prep course load.
She was on the school Honor Roll all four years and was a two-year
representative on the National Honor Roll.
She is a member of the National Honor Society and is listed among the
Who’s Who Among American High School Students and
Who’s Who in Sports.
She
has been active in the Sunshine Society, serving on the Executive Council for
one year and is a member of the Swing Choir and girl’s sextet, which performs
at numerous community and church gatherings.
Her
volunteer work includes being active in the school’s volleyball and basketball
camps. She has been a Jr. Church
