BREBEUF
JESUIT TOP OF THE HEAP IN CLASS 3A
The trip to
the state finals for Brebeuf Jesuit proved as
memorable as it could possibly be as the third-ranked Braves emerged with a
four-game victory over No. 4 Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran in the Class 3A
state title match at Hinkle Fieldhouse in
Indianapolis on November 8, 2003.
The teams
split the opening two games with Brebeuf grabbing a
21-19 win in the opener and Concordia answering in the second with a 21-16
edge. From there, the Braves carried it home winning 21-19 and 21-17 to close
out their first volleyball state championship season. With a 35-4 mark, it was
the school’s eighth in a sport with the last coming during the 1999-00 boys basketball season in Class 3A.
Senior
Natalie Mullikin led the Brebeuf
charge on offense with 16 kills, while Kim Kristoff
added 11. Teammate Sarah Grey was successful on seven of her eight kill
attempts for an impressive .875 hitting percentage.
Kamaria
Alexander led Concordia Lutheran, making its first trip to a state championship
match since the Cadets’ 1976 runner-up team, with 14 kills. Celina Bustamante headed up the defense with 14 digs to her
credit.
The Braves,
coached by Brian Murray, earned a hard-fought win over Mishawaka Marian during
the morning semifinals, 21-18, 18-21, 21-19, 21-18.
Concordia Lutheran, under coach Tony Terrell, swept
its way past first-timer Heritage Hills in the other semi, 21-9, 21-15, 21-16.
