FOOTBALL PRACTICE IN HIGH GEAR

309 state high school football teams began practice on August 5th in preparation for the 2002 IHSAA season which will kickoff this Friday, August 23..  That total remains the same as last year, despite the loss of South Bend LaSalle.  With the departure of the Lions, Heritage Christian became eligible for varsity competition and, at this time, has an eight-game schedule lined up.

Back to defend their respective titles this season are Ben Davis in 5A, with the Giants opening up on the road against Indianapolis Cathedral; Jasper in 4A at Evansville Memorial on Saturday;  Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in 3A traveling to Indianapolis Broad Ripple; Fort Wayne Bishop Luers at Fort Wayne Snider in 3A; and Southern Wells in Class A hosting Blackford.

A complete listing of schedules for each of the state teams is available on the IHSAA website at 2002 IHSAA Football.

The scores of each team’s games will be updated weekly throughout the season.  Again this year, updated statistics on the state’s individual leaders will be made available on the web.

OTHER FALL SPORTS ALSO BUSY

In addition to the action on the football fields, girls golf and volleyball, boys tennis, along with girls and boys soccer and cross-country have also jumped into the fray.

Girls golf competition officially got underway on August 5th.  Western picked up last year’s championship, its first in the sport, with a strong showing against nine-time state winner, Martinsville.  For the latest ICGSA Poll, log on to 2002 Girls Golf Poll.

Boys tennis took to the court on August 19th, with Center Grove’s Trojans looking to make it two in a row following their 4-1 victory over Terre Haute North in 2001.

In soccer action, on the girls side, Carmel will be searching for its third consecutive state championship and sixth overall.  Meanwhile, Fort Wayne Canterbury’s boys squad will be looking to go back-to-back and pick up their fourth overall state title.  The first contest date for both boys and girls competition was scheduled for August 19th.

In cross-country, the first contest date was also August 19th, with the girls defending champion, Carmel, looking for title number-eleven having dominated the sport since its inception in 1981.  The Greyhounds have been equally as strong in boys competition, with ten state titles, the last coming in 1996-97.  The Franklin Grizzly Cubs took home the hardware one year ago, their first-ever championship in the event.

Volleyball excitement has also heated up, with the first official contest on August 19th.  Indianapolis Cathedral, Delta, Muncie Burris and Michigan City Marquette all return squads with a repeat state title in mind.

The Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association has distributed its pre-season poll, with Indianapolis Cathedral holding down the premier position in Class 4A.  Delta tops the Class 3A list.  Muncie Burris shows the way in Class 2A.  Michigan City Marquette is number-one in Class A  For a complete look at the top-ten in each classification, log on to the IHSVC website at 2002 Girls Volleyball Poll.

SOCCER & FOOTBALL STATS TO BE COMPILED

As in the past, the IHSAA will be compiling statewide football statistics in a number of categories and posting them on the website (ihsaa.org) under football.  For a copy of the information and forms forwarded to the schools, click on the attachment listed above.  We appreciate any assistance your organization may be able to provide in the compilation of these statistics.

This year, for the first time, we are also going to attempt to compile a limited number of soccer statistics.  For a copy of that sport’s stat form, click on the attachment  listed above.  Again, any assistance you may be able to provide in our attempt to put together a statewide review of soccer, both boys and girls, would be appreciated.

REGULAR-SEASON DOME CREDENTIALS

As in the past, several regular-season high school games will be played at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis during the 2002 season. The IHSAA office DOES NOT handle credential requests for those games. Media outlets should contact the participating schools regarding credentials.

POLLS

Polls for football and the other IHSAA fall sports are updated weekly on the IHSAA website under the respective sport. Polls will be posted as they become available from the respective coaches associations which conduct the polls in their sport.
