TED THROCKMORTON NAMED DISTRICT 5 MEDIA AWARD RECIPEINT

Ted Throckmorton of Jeffersonville, who has been behind the microphone for hundreds of high school basketball games in southern Indiana during the past five decades, has been named the 2000-01 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District 5. He will be honored Friday (Jan. 12) in pre-game ceremonies at the Jeffersonville-Floyd Central boys basketball game at Johnson Arena in Jeffersonville.

A native of Jeffersonville and a 1946 graduate of Jeffersonville High School, Throckmorton has served as the color analyst on WAVG Radio and its predecessor, WXVW Radio, of Jeffersonville for 38 consecutive seasons. For the first 34 seasons, he teamed with Charlie Jenkins, also a recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award. For the past four seasons, Throckmorton has been paired with Gil Daugherty.

Throckmorton’s colorful and insightful commentary has been a staple for high school basketball fans in the Jeffersonville area. He has been on the scene for five Jeffersonville treks to the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals, highlighted by the 1993 team’s state championship march. Over the years, Throckmorton and WXVW/WAVG have been constants at the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals regardless of whether a local team was involved.

Professionally, Throckmorton has been a successful Jeffersonville businessman and community leader since his graduation from Indiana University and after serving in the military during the Korean War. He retired in 1999 as owner of Clark County Beverage after 41 years of service. He also has been involved as a key volunteer the past 47 years with the Crusade for Children, a community fundraising telethon on WHAS-TV of Louisville that benefits handicapped children in the greater Louisville area.

Throckmorton and his wife, Alveda, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December. They are the parents of two children and the grandparents of two children.

This is the 17th year the IHSAA has recognized an outstanding member of the Indiana media from each of the five IHSAA legislative districts for excellence in the coverage of high school sports. Throckmorton is the third honoree for 2000-01, joining Jerry Baker of the IHSAA Network and Paul Beitler of the Bluffton News-Banner. The final two honorees for 2000-01 will be announced in coming weeks.
