MIKE MONTGOMERY NAMED DISTRICT I MEDIA AWARD RECIPIENT

Mike Montgomery, who has become a mainstay of high school sports coverage in the Logansport area, has been named the 2000-01 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District I. He will be honored Friday (Jan. 19) in pre-game ceremonies at the Logansport-New Castle boys basketball game at the Berry Bowl in Logansport.

As sports director of WSAL-AM/WLHM-FM, Montgomery has served with distinction as the play-by-play voice of high athletics in Cass County since 1987. In recent years, his primary role has been in the coverage of Logansport High School football, basketball and baseball for WSAL. The station is one of the few in the state that broadcasts a complete season schedule of high school baseball with its coverage of Logansport High School.

Montgomery began his radio career shortly after graduation from Lafayette Jefferson in 1983 where he lettered in tennis. While majoring in communications from Purdue University, he broke into radio sports broadcasting at WASK Radio in Lafayette under the tutelage of Harry Bradway, the long-time radio voice of the Bronchos. Upon graduation from Purdue, Montgomery joined WSAL/WLHM and has been affiliated with the stations since 1987. He also works as a full-time agent with the Kitchell Insurance Agency in Logansport.

He considers his coverage of Logansport’s march to the IHSAA baseball state championship in 1991 as a career highlight. Montgomery and his wife, Rhonda, are the parents of two daughters, Alyssa and Megan.

This is the 17th year the IHSAA has recognized an outstanding member of the Indiana media from each of the five IHSAA legislative districts for excellence in the coverage of high school sports. Montgomery is the fourth honoree for 2000-01, joining Jerry Baker of the IHSAA Network (District III), Paul Beitler of the Bluffton News-Banner (District II) and Ted Throckmorton of WAVG, Jeffersonville (District V). The final honoree for 2000-01 from District IV will be announced next week.

Zolman cracks career top 25 list

Helped by a season-high 45-point effort last week against Columbia City, state scoring leader Shanna Zolman has moved into the top 25 on the Indiana career scoring chart.

Zolman, who has scored 498 points in 15 games this season for a 33.2 average, has increased her career total to 1,913 going into tonight’s game (Jan. 16) with Whitko. She is 87 points away from becoming the 15th girl in state history to score 2,000 points in her career. The last player to reach the list was Amie Owsley of Marion Lakeview Christian during the 1999-2000 season. The first player to do it was Jodie Whitaker of Austin during the 1984-85 campaign.

Zolman led the state in scoring as a freshman (31.2 average) and sophomore (33.0 average). In 59 career games, she has averaged 32.4, topped by a 50-point game against Westview in 1999-2000. During the current season, Zolman has helped Wawasee to a 15-0 start by hitting .558 from the field (162-290) and .937 from the free throw line (120-128).

2001 team tournament draw on Thursday

Pairings for the regional round and the eight-team state finals of the Sixth Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling Tournament Series will be drawn on Thursday morning at the IHSAA office. The draw will begin at 8 a.m. It is anticipated that the pairings will be posted to the IHSAA website by 9 a.m.

The pairings will be listed under Wrestling/2001 Team Tournament Draw. The semi-state pairings, which are pre-determined, are listed on page 172 of the December 2000 edition of the IHSAA Bulletin. They will be repeated in the tournament pairings.

The 2001 IHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Series begins with sectional competition on Jan. 27 at 64 sites. The team champion at each site is determined on the basis of individual match competition. The team champions then advance to the team regional round on Jan. 31.

Seeds for the sectional round will be determined at the sectional seeding meetings to be conducted next Monday (Jan. 22) at the host school of each sectional.
