DEKALB ENTERS STATE TOURNEY AS LONE UNBEATEN

When the 91st IHSAA 2001 IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament opens its three-week run Tuesday night across the state, 381 teams will begin the chase for a state title. Only one of those – DeKalb – has the opportunity to complete the 2000-01 season with an unblemished record. The Barons wrapped up state’s only unbeaten regular season with a 75-66 triumph last Friday against Fort Wayne Dwenger.

It was the second unbeaten regular season in school history, the other coming in 1978-79 with a 22-0 record.

DeKalb, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Class 4A poll and No. 1 in the unified Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll, opens tournament play Tuesday against Northeast Hoosier Conference rival Carroll (Fort Wayne) in the first game of the Fort Wayne Northrop Sectional. DeKalb scored a 75-50 homecourt victory over Carroll on Feb. 3.

The 64 sectional champions will advance to regional play next Tuesday or Wednesday (March 13-14). The home team for the 32 regional games will be the champion from the odd-numbered sectionals (i.e., the winner of Sectional 1 will host the winner of Sectional 2).

Colclasure regains lead in state scoring race

Spurred by a school-record 47-point outburst Feb. 27, Bellmont’s Seth Colclasure has regained the state scoring lead from Brandon McKnight of South Bend LaSalle.

Colclasure hit 19 of 28 field shots with five three-pointers as Bellmont defeated Fort Wayne Northrop 77-60. The junior guard came back with 22 points March 2 as the Braves (17-3) defeated Fort Wayne South Side 66-56.

In his final regular-season outing on Feb. 27, McKnight scored 19 points and became the school’s season (581) and career (1,381) scoring leader as South Bend LaSalle (12-8) rallied to top South Bend St. Joseph’s 56-49.

Milestones

Carter Harris, a senior at Frankfort, reached the 1,000-point mark for this career March 2 in his final regular-season game as the Hot Dogs defeated Harrison (West Lafayette) 64-63. Harris left the game with 1,005 career points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer that delivered the victory.

Dedrick Finn, a junior at Castle, set school records for three-point goals (11) and points (37) in a game March 2 as the Knights (17-3) finished the regular season with a 67-49 victory over Evansville Memorial. Hitting 11 of 15 attempts, Finn tied the state best this season for three-pointers. Castle clinched its first Southern Indiana Athletic Conference boys basketball title with the victory. The triumph also gave Castle coach Steve Brunes his 400th career victory. Brunes is in his third season at Castle with previous stints at Brownsburg, East Central and Blackford.

Kouts completed Porter County Conference play unbeaten for the first time in the league’s 42-year history with a 78-68 road triumph over LaCrosse on Feb. 24.

Paul McBride, a senior at Tri, scored the 1,000th point of his career March 2 as the Titans defeated Centerville 53-46.

Chris Thomas, a senior at Pike, became the 34th player in state history to score 2,000 career points when he tallied 22 points March 1 in an 87-70 victory over Indianapolis Cathedral. Thomas is only the third player from Indianapolis to reach the plateau, joining Alan Henderson of Brebeuf (2,419) and George McGinnis of Indianapolis Washington (2,070). Thomas, a four-year varsity performer, left the game with 2,018 points to stand 32nd on the state’s career scoring list.
