MILESTONES

Shrya Ely, a senior from Ben Davis who earlier was voted Indiana’s Miss Basketball for 2001, will receive the Naismith Basketball Player of the Year award from the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Ely was one of 10 national finalists for the award. The other finalists included senior Jacqueline Batteast of South Bend Washington and junior Shanna Zolman of Wawasee. Ely averaged 16.8 points and 10.3 rebounds this past season while leading the Giants to their second consecutive IHSAA Class 4A state title.

A. T. (Sam) Rasmussen, athletic director at Valparaiso, was selected as the 2001 Indiana athletic director of the year by the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association at its annual convention. Rasmussen is in his 14th year as Valparaiso’s athletic director and previously coached boys track and field.

Jerry Stauffer, athletic director at Warren Central, has been elected the 2001-02 president of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. He succeeds Larry Jackowiak of Concord. Stauffer is in his 13th year as Warren Central’s athletic director after previously serving as football coach where he directed the Warriors to two IHSAA state titles.

Chris Thomas, a senior guard at Pike, was named the Gatorade high school boys basketball player of the year for Indiana and is a finalist for the national award.
