Media Release of September 19, 2000

Jerry Baker to receive IHSAA

Distinguished Media Service Award

Jerry Baker, who has made the call on many of the greatest moments in Indiana high school sports history as a broadcaster on the IHSAA Television Network, has been named the 2000-01 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award in District III.

He will be honored during pre-game ceremonies Friday (Sept. 22) at the Ben Davis-North Central football game at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. That game is the second of a doubleheader that opens at 6 p.m. with Carmel taking on Warren Central.

A native of Sullivan, Baker is a graduate of Sullivan High School and Indiana State University. He has spent his professional career in Indianapolis as a sports reporter and radio/TV personality. Baker presently is the sports director and on-air personality at WMYS Radio in Indianapolis. He also has provided play-by-play coverage on the weekly high school football telecasts this season by WHMB-TV in Indianapolis, and will continue in that role at the 2000 IHSAA Football State Finals in November.

Baker has been a mainstay on the IHSAA Television Network for more than 20 years. His long list of events includes state championship contests in football, girls basketball, boys basketball, volleyball, baseball, and track and field.

His distinguished professional broadcasting career has seen Baker in a variety of other roles. Those include radio and television stints with the Indiana Pacers and Indianapolis Colts, as a long-time member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Network radio broadcast crew, as the emcee of a 1964 Beatles concert at the Indiana State Fair, and as a sports reporter and on-air personality with WIBC Radio in Indianapolis. On Sunday, he will part of the radio broadcast team for the inaugural Formula One auto race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Baker has been honored numerous times for his work and contribution to Indiana sports. Most recently, he was named the 2000 recipient of the Farm Bureau Insurance Silver Medallion from the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Earlier this month, he was inducted into the Southwest Indiana Hall Athletic Hall of Fame.

Baker and his wife, Ramona, live in Indianapolis.

This is the 17th year the IHSAA has recognized an outstanding member of the Indiana media from each of the five IHSAA legislative districts for excellence in the coverage of high school sports. Baker is the first honoree for 2000-01. The awards in the other four IHSAA districts will be made throughout the school year.
