2000 football season

concludes on a high note

The 2000 Indiana high school football season came to a record-breaking conclusion last weekend as five state champions were crowned before a two-day crowd 42,881 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Friday’s attendance of 15,137 for the Class A and Class 2A state championship games was the highest since 1995 for that session, and the two-day total was the highest since 1997 when a record crowd of 46,720 was established.

Nine state championship game records were broken and 12 more were tied. The championship weekend completed a six-week tournament that began with 309 teams at the sectional level. More than 16,000 athletes participated.

Adams Central (Class A), Evansville Mater Dei (Class 2A), Heritage Hills (Class 3A) and East Noble (Class 4A) celebrated their first IHSAA football state titles. It also was the first IHSAA championship in any sport for Adams Central, East Noble and Heritage Hills.

Penn’s title in Class 5A was its fourth in the last six years and fifth overall. Only Sheridan, with six, has more football titles than the Kingsmen. They tied Ben Davis, Carmel, Indianapolis Cathedral and Roncalli by winning a fifth football crown.

By finishing as undefeated state champions, Evansville Mater Dei and Heritage Hills joined a list of unbeaten champions that now numbers 59. The list includes 12 in Class A, 13 in Class 2A, 17 in Class 3A, eight in Class 4A and nine in Class A.

First-time appearances by Adams Central, Attica, Center Grove, East Noble, Heritage Hills and Plainfield brought the list of schools who have played in the IHSAA Football State Finals to 106. Of that group, all but Indianapolis Washington are current IHSAA member schools. Of the current 309 IHSAA member schools that play football, 34 percent have reached the state finals at least one time in the tournament's 28 years. Fifty schools have reached the state finals more than once, led by Hobart with 11 appearances. A total of 63 schools have won an IHSAA football state championship. In total, 118 champions have been crowned.

During the course of the 2000 season, three state records were broken and three were tied as reported to the IHSAA and the Indiana Football Coaches Association.

New records were set in 2000 for:

Records tied in 2000 were:

Two of the most notable state individual season records were chased to the brink but failed to tumble on the last weekend of play. Attica running back Josh Smith finished the 2000 season with 63 touchdowns and 449 total points. The state records, both set by Sheridan’s Brett Law as a junior in 1988, are 66 touchdowns and 453 points. Law’s season scoring total also remains the national record as verified this week by the statistical bureau at the National Federation of State High School Associations which compiles records from across the nation.

Evansville Mater Dei junior quarterback Jake Schiff finished 2000 with 43 passing touchdowns. The state record is 45 by Warren Central’s Jeff George as a senior in 1985. Schiff has thrown for 7,727 yards and 85 touchdown passes in two seasons as a varsity performer. The state records are 11,110 yards and 111 touchdowns, both held by Martinsville’s Earl Haniford.

Several new entries were added during the 2000 season to the Indiana Individual Top 10 lists for season and career achievements. A final 2000 update of those charts is listed below.
