EIGHT ELECTED TO SERVE ON IHSAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Eight high school administrators were elected to the IHSAA Board of Directors during the annual elections conducted by mail vote within the member schools in each of the five IHSAA districts Dec. 1-10. Each member school principal had the opportunity to vote for the candidates running for seats in the respective district. The open seats are apportioned geographically and by school size.

Two educators were re-elected to serve in open seats, three others were elected for the first time to fill open seats, and three more were elected to serve in urban school seats.

For the first time, voting was conducted to fill the new urban school seats created by the IHSAA Board of Directors at its annual meeting on May 1, 2000. Three seats were created, with the members to be elected from schools serving an urban population. The districts were drawn to run horizontally and divide the state in thirds. The addition of the urban seats brings the number of education professionals who served on the IHSAA Board of Directors to 21 beginning July 1, 2001.

As with other IHSAA board seats, the urban school members will serve staggered terms. For the first cycle, the North District seat is a three-year term, the Central District seat is a two-year term and the South District seat is for a one-year term. In December 2001, the South District seat will be contested for a three-year term. In December 2002, the Central District seat will be contested for a three-year term. In December 2003, the North District seat will be open again and for a three-year term.

Mapes immediately fills a seat vacated last summer by Steve Riordan, former principal of Jennings County. Riordan is now principal at Mount Vernon High School, which is in District V. Mapes will serve the final seven months of Riordan’s term and begin a new three-year term on July 1, 2001. In addition to his Board of Director duties, Mapes will serve on the IHSAA Executive Committee from now until June 30, 2001 and again during the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 school years.

MINORITY SEAT APPOINTMENT

Raval is one of 32 American students selected for a Rhodes scholarship this year from nearly 1,000 applicants. He plans to study for a doctoral degree in molecular oncology at Oxford and then to pursue a medical degree in the U.S. with the goal of working in cancer research and public health policy. Raval, the son of Indian immigrants, will graduate next spring from I.U. with majors in biochemistry, biology, religious studies and Spanish. At I.U. he was a Herman B Wells Scholar and a Truman Scholar.
