TEAM WRESTLING TOURNEY PAIRINGS SET FOR THURSDAY

Pairings for the eight-team state finals of the 9th Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling Tournament Series will be drawn at the IHSAA office on Thursday, January 22, at 8:00 a.m.  Upon completion of the draw, the results will be posted on the web under Boys Wrestling.

 

This year’s tournament begins Saturday, January 31 with 32 sites across the state hosting sectionals. The top two teams from each individual sectional will advance to the team regional.  The team tournament will conclude with the eight state finalist teams battling for the championship on Saturday, February 28, at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

 

Defending state champion Evansville Mater Dei will begin its quest to extend its title streak at the nine-team Evansville Central Sectional.

 

Complete tournament information is available with sectional assignments as well as the pre-determined pairings for the regional and semi-state rounds is available at 2004 IHSAA Wrestling Tournament.

 

The IHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament will begin sectional competition on January 31.  Pairings for the sectional round will be determined at coaches meetings on Monday, January 26 at the host school of each sectional. The 16 individual regionals are scheduled for February 7, with the four semi-states on February 14 and the state finals on February 20-21 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

 

DISTRICT III MEDIA SERVICE AWARD TO BE PRESENTED FRIDAY

Brian Bohne, Sports Editor for The Ferdinand News in Ferdinand, Indiana and Spencer County Leader in Dale, Indiana, will receive the 2003-04 District III IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award at half-time of the Forest Park-Jasper boys basketball game on Friday, January 23.

 

IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress, along with IHSAA Board member Randy Barrett, Superintendent at Eastern Greene High School, will be on hand for the presentation, which will be hosted by Doug Louden, Athletic Director at Forest Park.

 

2004 IHSAA SOFTBALL SCRIMMAGE RULES & REGS POSTED

The latest IHSAA softball scrimmage rules and regulations for the upcoming season have been released and are posted on the IHSAA website at 2004 IHSAA Scrimmage Rules.

 

The 2004 softball season, which moves to four classes this year, gets underway with the first practice date February 23.  The first games may be played on March 22.  The state tournament begins on May 24, with the state finals slated for June 11-12.

 

2004 IHSAA TRACK & FIELD COMPETITION MOVES TO I.U.

As part of its Centennial Celebration, The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced that the 2004 Boys and Girls Track & Field State Championship meets will be conducted at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington June 4-5. 

 

That move was approved by unanimous vote by the IHSAA Executive Committee in its regular monthly meeting at the IHSAA offices on January 15, 2004.

 

The 101st Annual IHSAA Boys Track & Field State Championships will be held on Friday, June 4, 2004.  The 31st Annual IHSAA Girls Track & Field State Championships will be conducted on Saturday, June 5, 2004.

 

2004 IHSAA BASEBALL TOURNEY FORMAT SET

At its monthly meeting at the Indiana High School Athletic Association offices in Indianapolis on January 15, 2004, the IHSAA Executive Committee approved, by a vote of 14-1, the format for the 2004 IHSAA Baseball Championship Series. 

 

Tournament play must begin on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2004, with competition at 64 sectional sites.  Regional play is slated for the following Tuesday, June 8, 2004, with single games at 32 sites yet to be determined.  Semi-state games, with four teams per site, will be played on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at eight sites, also yet to be determined.  The State Championships in each of the four classes will be decided at Victory Field in Indianapolis on Saturday, June 19, 2004.

 

REGIONAL SITE CHANGE IN BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNEY

The 2004 IHSAA boys basketball tournament regional that was slated to be contested at Tipton and would host the winners from sectionals 53-56 in class A, has been changed to Frankfort, with the same participants still involved.

 

IHSAA APPROVES BASKETBALL SHOWCASES/TOP 40 WORKOUTS

At its monthly meeting, the IHSAA Executive Committee approved the organization’s involvement as a co-sponsor of the IHSAA/IBCA and IHSAA/IBCA/ICGSA Basketball Showcases, as well as the Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 40 Workouts, conducted in conjunction with the IHSAA and IBCA.

 

The IHSAA/IBCA Basketball Showcase for boys is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Ben Davis High School.  The IHSAA/IBCA/ICGSA Basketball Showcase for girls is slated for Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Ben Davis High School.  The Top 40 Workout for Senior girls will take place on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Ben Davis High School.  The Top 40 Workout for Senior boys will occur on Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Pike High School.

 

The Showcases will feature the top 100 underclass boys and girls from member schools as selected by members of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.  The Top 40 Workouts will display the top 50 senior boys and girls as selected by Hoosier Basketball Magazine, with consultation from IBCA representatives.

 

HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame will honor the Women’s Silver Anniversary Team on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.

 

This year’s honorees include:  Susan Baas, Southport; Debbie Benak, Hammond Bishop Noll; JoAnn Brouillette, Benton Central; Tracey Sargent Burton, Bedford North Lawrence; Barbara Graves, Anderson Madison Heights; Normela Upshaw Haire, East Chicago Roosevelt; Kim Land, North Central (Indpls.); Debra McClurg, Wes-Del; Barbara Skinner, Mount Vernon (Fortville); Cynthia Ocker, Blue River Valley; LaTaunya Pollard Romanazzi, East Chicago Roosevelt; Jane Emkes Schlesinger, Seymour; Melinda Sparkman, Scottsburg; Karen Bauer Stenftenagel, Jasper; Susie Thrapp, East Noble; and Lisha Robertson Wilson, Center Grove.

 

LAWRENCE NORTH STILL #1 IN IBCA RANKINGS

Lawrence North (14-1) holds down the top spot in the Indiana High School Basketball Coaches Association all-inclusive poll.  Due to the holiday on Monday, the Associated Press polls will not be released until Wednesday morning.

 

New to the IBCA rankings were Penn (#10) and LaPorte (#20), with Bluffton and Northview dropping off.

BEN DAVIS TAKES OVER TOP SPOT IN CLASS 4A ICGSA GIRLS BASKETBALL POLL

The Ben Davis Giants took over the leadership role in Class 4A of the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association girls basketball poll this week.  That was the only change among the frontrunners in each class as Brebeuf Jesuit (16-2), North Knox (16-0) and Indianapolis Lutheran (13-2) all maintained their lofty positions.

 

Dropping out of the top-10:  Carroll (F.W.)(4A); New Albany (4A); and Indian Creek (2A).

SWIMMING & DIVING POLLS STILL SHOW CARMEL AS POWERS

Once again, the Carmel Greyhounds swim teams dominated the weekly Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association boys and girls swimming polls.

 

Two new arrivals in the boys ratings this week, with Delta (#17) and Terre Haute North (#18) replacing Munster and Evansville Reitz.  The only one new arrival to the girls’ top-20 was Evansville Harrison (#20), replacing Noblesville.

In its first released poll of the 2003-04 season, the Indiana Gymnastics Coaches Poll has Center Grove, which finished fifth in last year’s state championship competition, logged in in the top spot.  Defending state champ Fort Wayne Dwenger is listed in the No. 4 position

MILESTONES

With 28 points against Mishawaka Marian on January 10, senior Gary Patterson became Hammond Noll’s all-time career leading scorer, with 1,451 points.

 

Heth VanDeventer of Bloomington North tied Pat Cassidy, also from North, for the Monroe County all-time record for wrestling victories with his 153rd win on January 14.

 

Hagerstown’s Lloyd Michael has announced his intent to retire as athletic director in June, after 21 years in that position with the Tigers.

 

Senior Nicole Fougerousse surpassed the 1,000 point career mark for Shakamak with her 20 point effort against Eminence on January 15.  She becomes the third Laker to reach that plateau, along with Chelsie Culler and Melissa Gould.

IHSAA OVERTIME

Willard Rice has announced his retirement as head football coach at Kokomo.  He took over the Wildkat program in 1991 and has amassed a 68-62 record over 13 seasons. He had previously coached at Eastern High School and has a 34 year career record of 166-144.

 

The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) has selected The Regional Radio Sports Network (RRSN) as top sportscasting team in Indiana. The 2003 NSSA Indiana Sportscaster of The Year honors went to RRSN’s Mike Knezevich.

 

Ken Coudret has left his position as head football coach at Pike. 

 

Katelyn Bishop, a senior at Terre Haute South, has been selected as the 2003 Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year in volleyball.
