Hamilton Southeastern is the defending team champion, turning in scores of 336-333—669 to defeat runner-up Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (341-341—682) in 2003.  Medalist honors last year belonged to freshman Emily Johnson of Warsaw (72-76—148).

BOYS TENNIS CAMPAIGN TAKES TO COURTS MONDAY

The chase for the 2004 IHSAA boys’ team and individual crowns will begin on Monday, August 2, the date for the official first practice.  The first contest date is Monday, August 16.

The 38th Annual IHSAA Tennis Team State Finals is scheduled to begin on September 30 with the opening round of sectional competition.  Regional play is slated for October 5-6, with the state finals on October 16.  The singles-doubles state champs will be decided on October 22-23, 2004.

The Carmel Greyhounds defeated West Lafayette 4-1 to lay claim to the 2003 team title.  Jarrod Epkey of Center Grove garnered the 2003 singles championship.  The duo of Trent Glassley and Brian Fleming from Carroll (Fort Wayne) combined to capture the doubles tournament title.

CROSS COUNTRY PRACTICE STARTS MONDAY

Practice will get underway statewide next Monday, August 2, for the boys and girls cross country teams as they prepare for the opening day of competition, August 16.

The 24th Annual Girls Cross Country and the 59th Annual Boys Cross Country Tournament state finals are logged in for October 30.  Sectional competition takes the starter’s gun on October 12, followed by the regionals on October 16 and the semi-states on October 23.

This year, due to a conflict with an Indiana University football game, the IHSAA Executive Committee has unanimously approved the move of the 2004 IHSAA State Cross Country Championships to the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

Columbus North won the boys’ title in 2003, with the Bull Dog’s Christian Wagner showing the way in a time of 15:37.4.  Valparaiso took home top honors for the ladies.  Alissa McKaig of Fort Wayne Concordia led the way, turning in a 14:06.9 effort.

SOCCER ALSO KICKS OFF ON MONDAY

The 2004 IHSAA boys and girls soccer seasons will face their opening practice sessions on Monday, August 2, with state titles up for grab on October 30.  The tournaments will begin on October 11 for the girls and October 12 for the boys.  The regionals go on October 19 (girls) and 20 (boys), with semi-state play for both on October 23.

Carmel took home honors on the girls’ side in 2003, with South Bend St. Joseph’s showing the way for the boys.

AUGUST 2 START DATE FOR VOLLEYBALL

Monday, August 2, will also signal the beginning of the 2004 volleyball campaign as practice begins all across the state.

The 33rd state tourney will commence on October 21, with the regional round on October 30 and the grand finale on November 6.

Looking to defend their 2003 titles:  Morristown (A); Muncie Burris (2A); Brebeuf Jesuit (3A); and Indianapolis Cathedral (4A)

AND FINALLY….A LITTLE  FOOTBALL, IF YOU PLEASE

A lot of players and coaches will be wishing and hoping for some cooler weather conditions come Monday, August 2, 2004.  That’s when the non-contact portion of their pre-season practice sessions takes to the gridirons.  They can begin banging on each other two days later, August 4, with the first games on tap for August 20.

The 32nd state tourney kicks off October 22, with three weeks of sectional action, followed by regional play on November 12, semi-state competition on November 19 and the state finals on November 26-27.

Those who captured titles in 2003 include:  Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter (A); Tri-West Hendricks (2A); Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (3A); Roncalli (4A); and Warren Central (5A).

FACEMASK RULES TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Softball Rules Committee approved a facemask/guard standard at its annual meeting June 6-7 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The rule subsequently was approved by the NFHS Board of Directors earlier this month at its meeting in San Diego.

Rule 1-6-6 will require all high school fast pitch softball players to wear batting helmets equipped with NOCSAE-approved facemasks/guards. The new standard will take effect on January 1, 2006, providing all state association-member schools with adequate time to budget and purchase new helmets that include guards, or to obtain facemasks to attach to current helmets. All masks must have the phrase “Meets NOCSAE standards” printed directly on them. Many manufacturers are already producing these facemasks.
