METHODIST SPORTS MEDICINE ADDS FOUR SCHOOLS

Methodist Sports Medicine Center's roster of high schools has grown by four this fall with the addition of Indianapolis Howe, Lebanon, Monrovia and Indianapolis Washington.  Methodist Sports Medicine Center provides sports medicine coverage for 28 Central Indiana high schools and is the "Official Sports Medicine Provider" of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and its state championship events.

Methodist Sports Medicine Center will staff all IHSAA championships in 2003-04, beginning with the girls' golf state finals on October 3-4. The event will be held at The Legends of Indiana in Franklin. The five-class Football State Finals will be November 21-22 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

NATIONAL FEDERATION UNVEILS DRUG TESTING POLICY NUMBERS

About 13 percent of the nation’s high schools have a drug-testing policy in place to test students for illegal or prohibited substances, according to a survey of high school athletic directors this summer.

The online survey was conducted jointly by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and the National Center for Drug Free Sport, Inc. A total of 861 athletic directors completed the survey.

Of the schools that have a drug-testing policy in place, 63 percent test student-athletes, while 20 percent test all students in the school. The testing is mandatory in 82 percent of the schools, and the method of testing is done randomly in 76 percent of the schools.

2003 FOOTBALL SEASON ADVANCES TO THIRD WEEK

The 2003 IHSAA football season moves into its third weekend of play this Friday evening at sites across the state.  The weekly IFCA poll again shows a number of changes, but only one at the top of the rankings.  That occurred in class 2A where Southridge, following a 48-14 loss at Jasper, fell to No. 8.  Harding, now 2-0 and coming off a 40-0 victory over Fort Wayne Wayne, takes over the top spot.

This week’s outstanding contests would include 5A top-ranked Ben Davis (2-0) playing host to No. 2 Warren Central (2-0) and third-ranked Center Grove (2-0) traveling to eighth-ranked Carmel (2-0).  Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, the leader in class 3A, hosts Indianapolis Roncalli (0-2), ranked No. 9 in 4A.  Indian Creek, No. 7 in class 2A (2-0), has a major showdown at home with the class A eighth-ranked Eastern Hancock (2-0) squad.

INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF DROPS 2003 FOOTBALL PROGRAM

Indiana School for the Deaf Principal Bob Kovatch has announced that his school’s 2003 varsity football program has been closed.  In his announcement he reiterated that administrators, staff, coaches, and interested individuals had weighed the pros and cons of trying to keep the program going in the face of much adversity.  Fewer than 12 experienced players dressed for the game on August 23 and the six or so substitutes had little to no varsity experience.  After a discussion with the IHSAA, Kovatch, along with athletic director Brian Bippus, decided that in the best interest of student/athlete safety they could no longer let the program compete at a Varsity level.

Arrangements are being made for the team members to work with members of the ISD coaching staff for daily conditioning activities with hopes of reviving the football program in the Fall of 2004.

Indiana School for the Deaf will be removed from tournament play in Sectional #38, which will now become a seven team sectional.

PAIR OF CHANGES AT NO. 1 IN VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS

Indianapolis Cathedral, which had taken over the top spot in last week’s IHSVC volleyball poll, dropped to second this trip, falling behind last week’s runner-up, Muncie Central.  There was also a change at the top of the class 3A ranking, where Indianapolis Bishop Chatard made a huge leap from the No.5 position to the top of the poll. Meanwhile, Muncie Burris (2A) and Michigan City Marquette (A) managed to hang on to leadership positions in their respective polls.

Poll newcomers this week included Valparaiso, climbing to fifth in class 4A, and Wes-Dell (#8) and Oldenburg Academy (#9) in class A.

PENN MOVES TO TOP SPOT IN GIRLS GOLF POLL

After opening up the season in the top-spot, falling to number-two in the ranking two weeks ago and then regaining the No. 1 slot last week, the Penn girls golf team found itself checking in at No. 3 in the weekly ICGSA poll.  Hamilton Southeastern made the leap from third to first, with Western going from fourth to the runner-up position.  Evansville Memorial fell from second to fourth and Fort Wayne Dwenger moved up a notch to round out the top-five.

The only new addition to the top-20 included Franklin Central at No. 17.  Dropping off the poll were Franklin and Mount Vernon (Fortville).

COLUMBUS NORTH AND VALPARAISO STILL ATOP

CROSS COUNTRY POLLS

The Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches weekly poll still had the same pair of teams in leadership roles for both the boys and the girls for the second week of the rankings.

In girls cross country, Valparaiso maintained its lofty ranking, with Chesterton leaping from sixth to second, Northridge and Indianapolis Cathedral each dropping a notch to third and fourth, and Columbus North moving up from the No.8 spot to round out the top-five.

Newcomers in the girls’ top-ten include Carmel (#6), Lawrence North (#7) and Franklin Central (#10).  Fort Wayne Concordia, Silver Creek and Homestead were all bumped from that group

The boys ranking order is still topped by Columbus North and Fort Wayne Northrop.  Carmel hade the move from sixth to third, with Hamilton Southeastern going from fifth to fourth and Lawrence North rounding out the top-five following a drop from No. 3.

The lone new arrival in the boys’ top-ten was Center Grove (#7), with Crown Point dropping out of that elite company.

TWO SITE CHANGES IN BOYS TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The upcoming 2003 boys IHSAA tennis tournament will have a site change for sectional #6.  The sectional originally slated to be hosted by Brownsburg, will instead be hosted by Avon, with the same teams (Avon, Brownsburg, Danville and Plainfield) participating.  That also means the winner of the Avon sectional will now meet the winner of the Pike Sectional in the Ben Davis Regional.

Also to be noted, the boys singles/doubles state finals will be conducted at Park Tudor High School, weather permitting.  Otherwise, they will be held at the Five Seasons Sports Country Club.

For the lineup of tennis sectional sites and the participants, log on to 2003 Boys Tennis Tournament Alignment.
