IHSAA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE RULES ON PROPOSALS

At its monthly meeting last week, the IHSAA Executive Committee ruled on several proposals that will affect the sports of basketball, golf and volleyball.

 

The committee approved by a 12-1 vote a volleyball proposal that mandates a three-out-of-five scoring format with no cap at the varsity level, but reduces the junior varsity and freshman level matches to a two-out-of-three format to 25 points with a third game played to 15. Junior varsity matches would have a third game cap of 25 and freshman matches a cap of 15. Also, the two minutes allotted for serving warm-ups is eliminated at all levels of competition.

 

The committee also approved by a 11-2 count the optional use of the libero (LEE-BAH-RO) player in high school volleyball beginning with the 2005 season. By definition, a libero is a player that specializes in defense and serve reception. The player wears a distinctive contrasting uniform from the other players on the team and is limited in the actions they can perform. The use of the libero was approved, effective in 2006-07, by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee January 9-10 at its annual meeting in Indianapolis. All volleyball rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

 

In basketball, the committee approved by a 13-0 vote the use of three-person officiating crews for all state basketball tournament games beginning with the 2006-07 tournament series.

 

During the 2004 tournament, the IHSAA began implementing three-person officiating for games at the regional, semi-state and state level. Three officials were again used at those levels as well as the sectional championship games during the 2005 tournament last March and the same format will be followed in 2006.

 

Committee members also voted unanimously to restrict all coaches from the greens during boys and girls golf competitions.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

 

  • Evan Beauchamp has been approved as the new coach of the Sheridan girls basketball team, replacing Randy Brimberry. Beauchamp is the husband of Indiana All-Star girls basketball assistant coach Haley Beauchamp.

 

  • Lance Christiansen has been recently named the new head volleyball coach at Northfield High School.  He replaces Eric Augustus who resigned after the 2004 season.

 

  • Wabash boys basketball head coach Mike Noszka has resigned after seven years with the Apaches to take a similar position in Wilmington, Ohio.

 

  • After 28 years of coaching track, including the past 13 as head coach, Wabash’s Terry Oswalt has stepped down from his position. Oswalt had a dual meet record of 115-23.
