BOYS BASKETBALL REGIONALS THIS SATURDAY

Two defending state champions survived sectional play and two schools captured their first championships in school history as 64 teams advance to the regional games in the 97th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament.

Regional games will be played Saturday, March 10, at 16 sites in the four classes with two semifinal games early in the day followed by a championship game that evening. The survivors will move on to the semi-state round for a single game on Saturday, March 17, with the winners earning a spot in the March 24 state finals at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Defending state champs Lawrence North (4A) and New Castle (3A) each won their respective sectional on Saturday and among 29 repeat winners from last year. For Lawrence North, it was its fifth consecutive and 24th straight tournament victory dating to 2003. Tecumseh (A) won its ninth consecutive sectional championship while Evansville Mater Dei (3A) lost a sectional game for the first time since 1998.

Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (3A) and Wheeler (2A) each won the first sectional championship in school history. Bishop Luers upended Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, 72-70, at Bellmont, while Wheeler topped Hammond Bishop Noll at home, 81-44.

Several long sectional championship droughts ended last weekend, the longest of which belonged to North Central (Farmersburg), which celebrated its first crown since 1967. The Class A Thunderbirds defeated host White River Valley, 49-39, in the final game.

Please note that the location of each semi-state game will be announced on Sunday, March 11, at ihsaa.org.

Regionals

Date: Saturday, March 10.

Admission: $6 per session; $9 both sessions.

BOYS BASKETBALL STATISTICS

ATTENTION BOYS BASKETBALL COACHES

Please be sure to report your final statistics of the season at Athlistics.com upon your team’s elimination from the state tournament so that your players will continue to appear in the weekly state leaders listings through the end of the state finals. The last compilation of the season will be announced the week following the state finals.

Information as of Tuesday, March 6, 2007

The following lists of statistical leaders are compiled from information contained at Athlistics.com, the IHSAA’s exclusive athletic statistics reporting and publishing service. The IHSAA encourages each of its member schools to participate by registering for free at Athlistics.com and updating team and individual statistics by 10 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. CT each Monday through the end of the season. Subscribers to the site will be able to assist their favorite school’s athletic department as 25 percent of subscription revenue benefits the school designated by the individual.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

Have an interesting note? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

On February 16, Todd Boldry became the all-time winningest boys basketball coach at Knox High School. He got his 138th win in the Redskins’ 49-41 win over West Central.

Paul Corsaro, a senior at Roncalli, tied the school’s single game scoring record and set the career scoring record with a 38 point outburst in the Rebels’ victory over 4A top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral on Feb. 8. He ended the game with 1,082 career points to his credit.

Sha'la Jackson became Fort Wayne South Side’s all-time leading scorer this season with 1,647 career points. She also set the record this year for points in a season with 620.

The Kokomo boys basketball program won its 1,550th game in school history on Feb. 23, when the Wildkats defeated Maconaquah, 74-64, in the regular season finale. Kokomo has now played 2,440 boys games in 103 years. That win total is believed to be a state record.

Cambridge City Lincoln girls basketball coach John Lewellen picked up his 250th career victory in the Golden Eagles’ 52-22 victory over Eastern Hancock on February 2.

Crown Point girls basketball coach Tom May announced his retirement as coach on Tuesday. May, who led the Bulldogs to state championships in 1984 and 1985 and runner-up finishes in 1983 and 1997, completes a 27-year career with a 442-173 record. He served as the head coach of the Indiana All-Star Teams in 1984 and 1992 and led the Indiana to the first series sweep of its Kentucky counterparts in 1984. He also doubled as a licensed official for several years having worked a state semifinal game in 1987 and 1991.

Clark Reeves, in his 28th season as head baseball coach at Avon, won his 400th game during the 2006 baseball season.  Reeves received a certificate from the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association in January that noted this accomplishment.
