FIFTEEN ITEMS BEFORE IHSAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The IHSAA Board of Directors will conduct its annual review of the Association’s by-laws during its meeting on Monday, April 30, in Indianapolis.

The 17-member board, with Boonville principal Mike Whitten presiding as President, will consider 15 proposals to amend the Association by-laws at the meeting which is scheduled for 8 am ET / 7 am CT at the IHSAA Office.

As outlined in the IHSAA by-laws, any member school principal, any member of the Board of Directors or the Commissioner may make a proposal for an amendment as long as it is presented to the IHSAA Office prior to March 1. The board has four options on each proposal: affirm, deny, table or amend.

A copy of the agenda that is before the Board is available in PDF format from the IHSAA website. A copy of the current by-laws also is available in PDF.

On March 21 at the 48th Annual Awards Dinner, IHSAA Associate Commissioner Ray Craft was presented the President’s Award by current Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame President John Milholland. The award recognizes an individual’s outstanding service to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.  IBHOF Executive Director Roger Dickinson commented, “Ray does so much for basketball in Indiana and often goes above and beyond in his contributions.”

Nick David has been named head girls basketball coach at DeKalb High School

Jon Heiden has been hired as the new varsity football coach at Vincennes Lincoln.  Heiden will replace Mike Hidde who retired after 17 years as the Alices head coach.  Heiden, a 1998 graduate of the school, was an all-state quarterback for Hidde, and has served as the defensive coordinator for the past three years.

Pendleton Heights senior Chelsea Held set a state record on Friday when she blasted four home runs in her softball team’s 20-3 victory over Anderson in the Madison County Tournament. Held finished with eight RBI in the game, including two three-run homers in the third inning and solo shots in the fourth and fifth innings. The previous mark of three home runs had been held by several players and most recently by Evansville Memorial’s Brittany Deweese last season.

The wrestling team at Indiana School for the Deaf was named 2007 Team of the Year by DeafDigest Sports, national media serving high school deaf sports. Coached by Mike Paulone and Chad Campbell, the team posted the best record in school history with 17 wins and one loss. The team claimed the National Prep Wrestling Tournament at California with an average score of 62-19 over six other deaf schools.  Eleven wrestlers are named to the All-American team. Also, Senior Nuketira Hayes and sophomore Gabriel Paulone were named First Team All-America by DeafDigest Sports in basketball.

Northwestern junior forward Zavier Sanders scored his 1,000th career point against Winchester in the Class 2A state championship basketball game. He is now fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list.

Darcie Warner, a senior at Springs Valley, went over the 1,000 point mark for her basketball career on Jan. 18. Warner ended her career with 1,123 points, the second highest girls total in school history.

Chesterton sibling swimmers Talor and Kyle Whitaker were featured in “Faces in the Crowd” in the March 19 edition of Sports Illustrated. Each captured two individual state titles this winter. Talor, a senior, won the 100 and 200 freestyles, while Kyle, a freshman, won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.
