REGIONAL CROWNS, STATE TRACK MEET QUALIFYING ON THE LINE THIS WEEK
Sixteen regional events will
be conducted this week in the track and field state tournaments for girls and
boys. All eight girls events will be contested today (May 20), while seven of
eight boys sites are scheduled for Thursday, May 22. The Evansville Central
boys regional will be contested on Wednesday.
Warren Central’s girls
squad, the two-time defending state champions, will be looking to equal a state
record if it can capture tonight’s regional crown. An eighth consecutive
regional crown would tie the mark currently held by North Central of
Indianapolis (1984-1991). The Warriors dominated in winning last week’s Shelbyville
sectional outdistancing the nearest team by 88 points.
Qualifiers from each regional
site will advance to their respective state meets in Bloomington. This
year’s girls state meet is scheduled for Friday, May 30, with the boys
meet the next day.
Results from each regional
will be posted on the IHSAA website as they become available from the host
site. Heat sheets for the state meet also will be posted to ihsaa.org later
this week.

for consideration.
South Bend Washington girls
basketball coach Marilyn Coddens has
stepped down from her post to assume the athletic director duties at the
school. She became the interim AD April 28 and was approved at the SBCSC Board
of Trustees on May 5. Coddens guided the Panthers to three consecutive 4A state
championship game appearances including winning the 2007 title. During her 14
seasons, the Panthers were 245-75.
Veteran IHSAA swimming official Dirk Combs, 47, of Washington passed away on May 7 at St. Mary's
Hospital in Evansville.
Huntington North pitcher Katie Hackney recorded her 1000th career strikeout on May 15
against Columbia City, a game in which she threw a no-hitter. Hackney is 67-11
over her career and has thrown 21 no-hitters including five perfect games. In the same game, she set Huntington North’s
career home run record with her 11th round-tripper.
The Vincennes Community
School Board approved the recommendation of Jeff Hein as the new boys basketball coach at Vincennes Lincoln
High School. Hein will replace Steve Combs who resigned his position
earlier this spring to concentrate on his assistant principal position at Clark
Middle School. Hein becomes only the fourth head coach at Vincennes Lincoln in
the past 41 years.
Gary Merrell, boys basketball coach at Fort
Wayne Blackhawk Christian, has retired after 35 years of a varsity coaching
career, including the past seven years with the Braves. Merrell leaves the
Braves with six consecutive sectional championships, three regional championships,
a semi-state championship and a state runner-up team in 2004. Merrell ends
his career with a record of 107 wins and 65 losses with the Braves and 447 wins
and 337 losses overall.
South Bend Adams softball
coach John Woodruff won his 400th softball game on Thursday, May 1, by
defeating Brandywine (MI), 5-0, in seven innings. Woodruff is in his 26th season
of coaching softball in South Bend, the first 20 years at South Bend LaSalle.
Roncalli has hired Sara Riedeman as its new girls basketball coach. Riedeman was most
recently a varsity assistant coach at Indianapolis Bishop Chatard. She was a
2001 all-state selection from Greensburg High School and a member of the
Indiana All-Stars that year. She spent
two seasons at Western Kentucky University before transferring to the University
of Indianapolis for her final two seasons.
Mitchell baseball coach Gary Seitzinger picked up his 400th
career victory on Friday, May 16, as the Bluejackets won on the road at Bloomfield.
James Bryce Stephens, known as "J.B.," passed away
Thursday, May 8, 2008, at the age of 100, in Greenfield. He was a former
teacher, coach, principal and superintendent as well as a community leader. The
J.B. Stephens Elementary School was named for his community leadership and his
involvement in the education of Greenfield students. In recent years, he was
often recognized for having attended the boy’s state basketball finals
for 82 consecutive years. He began attending the finals in 1925 and coached
Cicero when it qualified for the 16-team State Finals in 1932.
