THIRTEEN FORMER CHAMPS RETURN TO TRACK AND FIELD STATE MEET

The state’s best in high school track and field converge in Bloomington this weekend as the IHSAA conducts the 35th annual girls state finals on Friday and the 105th boys state finals on Saturday. This is the fifth year both meets will be contested at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.

The girls meet features 10 individuals who have been crowned state champions including nine from last season while the boys meet includes just three returning winners from 2007.

Five girls will be attempting to win the third state championship of their careers in a respective event. Foremost among them is Culver Academies’ Alex Banfich. The senior will be going for her third consecutive title in the 3200 meters and is also the defending champ in the 1600. Last fall, she wrapped up her third straight state cross country title and should she win both distance events Friday night, she would finish her prep career with eight state titles, more than any other distance runner, boy or girl, in state history. Celeste Susnis of Kankakee Valley and Courtney Adams of Brebeuf Jesuit each won three cross country crowns and four track titles.

Also gunning for a three-peat is Warren Central’s Candyce McGrone. The senior is the two time-defending champ and top seed in the 200 meters and also will try to repeat in the 100 meters. Park Tudor junior Hannah Farley has won the last two 400 meter races and is the favorite again as the top seed in the event. Muncie Central junior Erynn Young has taken the last two long jump competitions in Bloomington and had the best mark of anyone at the regional level last week. Rachel Deloney of Bloomington North had the mark discus throw last week and is the favorite to win her third crown in four years.

For Saturday’s boys competition, Matt Terrell of Ben Davis is the returning state champ and top seed in 200 meters and also had the best time in the 100 meters at the regional. Gary Wallace senior Robert Gardner returns to defend his 400 meters championship from last year again with the top time and Fort Wayne Northrop junior Corey Shank will attempt to win another crown in the pole vault after setting the new state meet record in the event last year (17-0).

The Warren Central girls and boys teams will be attempting to win the team titles for the third consecutive year but figure to face stiff competition this weekend. Last year, the school became the first to sweep both titles in consecutive years.

North Central of Indianapolis sits atop the latest girls coaches poll from the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches. Warren Central is second and is followed by Lawrence North, Carroll (Fort Wayne) and Westfield. The latest boys poll lists Ben Davis first, followed by Lawrence North, Pike, Warren Central and Lafayette Jefferson.

ANDERSON’S MIKE PADFIELD TO BE HONORED AS OUTSTANDING OFFICIAL

An 18-year veteran official, Anderson resident Mike Padfield is the 2008 recipient of the Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of track and field.

Padfield will be honored in a special ceremony during this weekend’s state finals.  During his career, he has 27 sectionals, 15 regionals, and seven state finals assignments to his credit.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of the 11 sports during the school year.

Padfield was nominated for this award by the Central Athletic Officials Association, one of the 26 associations located throughout Indiana made up of men and women who give up much of their personal time to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile and healthy activities for the student-athletes of our state.  This honor comes as a result of Padfield’s selection by a committee representing those 26 associations.  Statewide, there are almost 7,500 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.

A 32-year member of the Central Athletic Officials Association, Padfield has served as president, vice-president, and secretary during his tenure.  He has served as rules interpreter and sports chairman in four other IHSAA sports in addition to track and field: basketball, football, soccer, and cross country.

He is a 1970 graduate of Mater Dei High School in Breese, Illinois.  He later attended Kaskaskia College (IL) and graduated in 1972.

Padfield has worked as a commercial accounts manager for Lehman’s Mechanical Contractors in Anderson for the past seven years.

Mike has twin sons, Cory and Toby, and three grandchildren, Alexandra, Hannah, and Andrew.

PARK TUDOR GIRLS TENNIS LOOKS FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT CROWN

Four of the top five ranked teams in the final regular season coaches poll have advanced to the final four of the 34th annual IHSAA Girls Tennis Team Tournament on Saturday at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

All four teams are quite familiar with the state finals setting including top-ranked Park Tudor, which will be playing for its fourth consecutive state crown. The Panthers (18-0) are making their eighth appearance overall and are 10-0 in the state finals match since the current four-team format began in 1982.

Second-ranked Munster (19-1) returns for the third straight year after falling to Park Tudor in the state title match the previous two seasons. The Mustangs top three singles players and No. 2 doubles team have not dropped a match all year. The team’s lone loss of the season was a 3-2 setback to the Panthers at home on May 1. The two teams could square off in the final for a third straight year if they can win their semifinal matches.

No. 4 Jasper (18-0) will meet Park Tudor in one semifinal on Saturday. The Wildcats will be making their third appearance this decade in the state finals, including last year’s visit, and reached the championship match in 2002 and 2003 but settled for the runner-up spot both times. Jasper fell to Munster in last year’s morning round.

Zionsville, ranked No. 5, will face Munster in the other semifinal match. The Eagles (20-1) are making their fourth trip to the state finals in seven years, most recently in 2005, and will try to reach the title match for the first time.

Also taking place this weekend in the Indianapolis area are the individual regionals for singles and doubles players. Pairings for those matches are listed below.

Results from all the matches will be available from ihsaa.org throughout Saturday.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

Have an interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

Woodlan sophomore Corbin Bell hit five consecutive home runs over two games earlier this month.  He hit homers in his last three at-bats against Fort Wayne Canterbury on May 12 and two more against Heritage on May 13. It’s the second longest home run streak in state history. Bob Squires of DeKalb hit six straight round-trippers in 1982.

Greenfield-Central has hired Doug Laker as its new girls basketball coach.  Previously, Laker has been serving as Assistant Athletic Director at the schools and will continue in that position.

Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian has hired Trent Lehman as its new principal and varsity boys basketball coach. Lehman spent his previous three years in coaching and administration for Athletes in Action.  Prior to AIA, he was the varsity boys coach at Speedway for five years leading them to a 2A state championship in 2002.

North Posey has hired two new basketball coaches recently. Matt Wadsworth is the new boys basketball coach. Wadsworth had been the coach at Riverton Parke. Also, Tracy Stroud, previously the boys reserve basketball coach, has been hired as the new girls varsity basketball coach.

North Posey baseball coach Mike Swartzentruber will resign effective at the end of the current baseball season to accept the position of varsity baseball coach and business teacher at Martinsville. Swartzentruber has been the head coach at North Posey for the past 11 years. He took his team to the 2A State Finals in 2000 and won the 2A state championship in 2005 and 2006.
