GIRLS GOLF REGIONALS THIS SATURDAY

With two sectionals still to be completed this week, the regional round of the 36th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Tournament is on tap this Saturday at seven locations. At each site, the top three teams along with the top three individuals (including ties for third place) not with an advancing team will earn a spot in next week’s state finals at The Legends of Indiana in Franklin.

Sectional play at Valley View, hosted by Floyd Central, is expected to wrap up today, while play at Old Oakland, hosted by Mount Vernon (Fortville) was postponed until Wednesday.

Top-ranked and defending state champion Martinsville (306) won its sixth straight sectional last weekend at West Chase edging No. 2 Avon (308) by two strokes. Both teams will move on to regional competition at Fox Cliff where the Artesians will be gunning for their fifth straight regional championship.

Twin Lakes continued its dominance in sectionals winning its 11th consecutive crown at Sandy Pines in Wheatfield and adding to the state’s longest active string in the sport. The Indians will attempt a repeat regional crown at Beechwood in LaPorte.

Evansville Memorial, which won its ninth straight sectional crown at Fendrich last Saturday, will be trying for a sixth consecutive regional title this weekend at Eagle Valley.

Shenandoah was the only team over the weekend to capture its first sectional championship when it beat out second place Yorktown by 22 strokes at Crestview in Muncie.

Results from each site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available from the hosts. Also, pairings and tee-times for the state finals are scheduled to be available Sunday barring any weather delays.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

Have an interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

In effort to raise awareness that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Columbia City’s girls soccer team will don pink jerseys in its home contest against Heritage on Wednesday, Sept. 24. During the game, there will be a silent auction for each jersey with all funds raised going to the Whitley County Giving Circle of Women’s Health, a program of the Whitley County Community Foundation.

Delta volleyball player Darcy Dorton was recently featured on the September cover of ESPN RISE magazine, a high school sports publication.  In addition, three photos of the senior in her team uniform were included in a four-page spread accompanied by an article titled, “Righteous Kill”, which discussed how she balances her time training and playing for Delta, her club team as well as the United States Junior National Volleyball Team.

Lawrence North’s Trae Heeter ran back a 99-yard kickoff for a touchdown setting a school record in the Wildcats’ 21-14 win over Plainfield on Aug. 29.

On Sept. 5, South Adams senior Kinsey Lengerich, set a new school record for a kicker with 11 points in the Starfires’ 59-21 homecoming win over Bluffton. She made all eight of her extra points and was 1 for 1 in field goals. She is the first female to score a point in varsity football in Adams County history.

Earlier this month, South Bend Clay edged South Bend Adams, 2-1, in boys soccer giving Clay coach George Lund his 300th victory. Lund has been the head coach during the 28 years of the program's existence and has an overall record of 300-165-52.

Jay County quarterback Billy Wellman, set two new schools records as the Patriots bested Franklin County, 56-25, on Sept. 5. The senior threw for seven touchdowns in the game, all in the first half including five in the second quarter. Amazingly, he only passed the ball 16 times with 11 completions and one interception. The seven touchdowns broke the old school record of four. Wellman also broke the school record with 402 passing yards, 391 of which came in the first half.
