CARROLL REPEATS AS STATE CHAMPION WITH SECOND
STRAIGHT TITLE GAME WIN OVER CATHEDRAL
For the second consecutive
season, Carroll (Fort Wayne) won
a nailbiter in the Class 4A baseball
state championship game against
Indianapolis Cathedral. The Chargers
knocked off the Irish, 5-3, Saturday
night at Victory Field to win the
school’s second baseball state title
and became the first 4A team to
repeat as state champion.
Cathedral’s starting pitcher, Dillon
Peters, struggled with his control early
in the game. Peters issued four walks
in the first two innings, and the Irish
found themselves in a 3-0 hole after
two. Despite struggling to find his
rhythm, Peters still finished with 12
strikeouts in the complete game.
Gavin Downs, who also pitched
a complete game for Carroll, worked
his way in and out of jams throughout
the night. He induced a double play
ground ball with the bases loaded
to end the second inning, and then
struck out Peters with the game-tying
run on first base to end the game.
Downs gave up 10 hits and struck out
four.
Carroll first baseman Steve
Remesnik led the way offensively with
two hits and an RBI, and right fielder
Austin Keathley knocked in two runs
with a second-inning double. Carroll
scored an insurance run in the bottom
of the 6th, courtesy of a perfectly-
executed suicide squeeze by hitter
Tanner Ginder and baserunner Peyton
Lengacher. Dave Ginder’s Chargers
ran their winning streak to 25 games
and finished the season with a 32-2
record.
For the Irish, who finish 28-3 under
the guidance of head coach Rich
Andriole, it was a second consecu-
tive Class 4A runner up finish. Nick
McCarty was 3-for-3 with a double
for Cathedral, and Phil Mosey went
2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and
a stolen base.
Following the game, Cathedral’s
Phil Mosey was named the winner of
the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award
for Class 4A Baseball by the IHSAA
Executive Committee.
