Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award
Beginning with the 1985 tournament, the mental attitude award in wrestling was named after Ward E. Brown, the
IHSAA’s fourth commissioner. Mr. Brown served as commissioner from 1976 to 1983. He also served as assistant
commissioner from 1969 to 1976, and while principal of Crawfordsville High School, he served as a member of the
IHSAA Board of Control in 1967-68. During his term as commissioner, the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals moved to
Market Square Arena in 1981 and enjoyed tremendous growth.
Previously, the award was known as the Harold F. Mumby Award from 1966 to 1971 and was presented to the
outstanding wrestler in the state meet by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association. The award was
named in honor of the Bloomington High School coach of 10 state championship wrestling teams. From 1972 to
1984, the IHSAA Executive Committee renamed and presented the Harold F. Mumby Award for Mental Attitude.
Ward E. Brown The recipient of this award, who is nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholar-
IHSAA Commissioner ship, leadership and athletic ability in wrestling. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate partner, will
1976-83 present a $1,000 scholarship to the school in the name of the recipient.
