Girls Tennis Crown a Perfect Fit for Evansville Memorial
Top-ranked Evansville Memorial completed a perfect
25-0 season with a 3-2 state championship match victory
over No. 10 Indianapolis Cathedral at North Central High
School in Indianapolis.
The Tigers won the first three matches of the contest
at No. 2 and 3 singles along with No. 2 doubles to clinch the
school’s sixth state championship in the sport and first since
1996. Ray Trapp was Memorial’s head coach.
Memorial’s No. 2 singles player Jasmine Lee also
finished an undefeated sophomore season winning all
three matches this weekend to end 25-0 including a 6-0,
6-1 win over Cathedral’s Abby Brady. Meanwhile, it may
have been a bittersweet finish for the team’s No. 1 doubles
pair of Rachel Swartwood and Liz Wilm who suffered their
first loss this year in the final match falling 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) to
Cathedral’s Caroline Combs and Carlene Eckhart.
To earn their spot in the final, the Tigers defeated No.
4 Penn (19-2) in Friday’s quarterfinal round then knocked
out No. 2 Carmel (17-1) in Saturday’s semifinals, the
defending state champions they lost to in last year’s final
match.
Cathedral (18-5), coached by Mark Noe, was making
its first appearance in the state title contest. The Irish
topped No. 5 Jasper, 3-2, on Friday and then rallied to beat
No. 14 Fort Wayne Canterbury in the semifinals, 3-2.
