Last Year’s State Finals in Review
WAPAHANI SWEEPS EASTERN GREENE FOR CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Second-ranked Wapahani (30-6) began this year’s
state tournament with one of the biggest upsets in years
and carried that momentum all the way to the Class 2A
state championship with a sweep of No. 3 Eastern Greene,
25-16, 28-26, 25-14. It was the school’s second volleyball
state championship under coach Mike Lingenfelter to go
along with its 2002 Class A crown. Since the class sports
era began in 1997, Wapahani also became just the second
school to win a title in two different classes and the first to
do so in Class A and 2A.
The Warriors’ upset of No. 1 Muncie Burris on open-
ing night of the sectional (Oct. 18) ended Burris’ 14-year
stranglehold on the 2A state championship and state record
win streak of 95 consecutive tournament matches. After
falling in the opening set, Eastern Greene appeared ready
to take the second and tie the match holding a 24-22 ad-
vantage but consecutive kills by the Warriors’ Lindi Thomas
and Brittany Cline evened the score. Wapahani survived
two more set points at 25-24 and 26-25 before reeling off
three consecutive of their own stealing a 2-0 lead. The War-
riors raced to an 8-2 lead in the decisive set and were never
threatened again.
Thomas and Cline led Wapahani with 21 and 12 kills,
respectively. Teammate Taylor Richardson ended with 21
digs and four service aces. Scottie Ingram finished with 16
kills for Eastern Greene. Coached by Mike Lingenfelter,
Wapahani became the second Delaware County school of
the day to win following Wes-Del’s Class A championship.
WES-DEL SWEEPS TO FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Third-ranked Wes-Del raced off to early leads in the
first two sets and went on the sweep the Class A state
championship match with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 victory
over No. 6 Trinity Lutheran at Worthen Arena in Muncie.
With Logan Millspaugh serving, Wes-Del (32-7) jumped
out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and a 8-1 start in the second
to spring the Warriors to a quick 2-0 lead in the match. In
the third set, Trinity Lutheran grabbed its first lead at 5-4
and held the advantage six different times during the final
frame but with the set tied at 20-20, Alexa Antrim’s kill gave
Wes-Del the lead and they wouldn’t trail again.
It was the Delaware County school’s first state champi-
onship of any kind following a 32-7 season under coach Biff
Wilson. The Warriors were state runner-up in 2009 and had
also made an appearance in the 1976 state finals.
Antrim led all players with 17 kills and helped the
Warriors defensive cause with 13 digs, tied with teammate
Lindsay Niccum. Marisa Mathews added 15 kills and
Millspaugh landed four service aces.
Sara Stuckwisch led Trinity Lutheran with 13 kills
and Kyra Klosterman dug 12 balls on defense. It was the
Cougars (32-6) first state finals appearance in any sport.
Chelsey Hackman is the coach.
