Last Year’s State Finals in Review
Carmel Repeats as Class 4A State Champion
Carmel captured its second consecutive Class 4A boys basket-
ball championship and third overall, but only after the Greyhounds
staved off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Indianapolis Cathedral
Fighting Irish.
The Greyhounds led wire to wire, with a big lead of 18 points in
the second quarter. However, when Cathedral’s Garrett Hall complet-
ed a thee-point play with 4.6 seconds left in the game, the Carmel
edge was cut to two at 55-53. The Irish fouled James Crowley, who
connected on two free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining for the
final margin.
Timely plays and sound defense made it happen for Carmel,
which won its 113th IHSAA state championship overall, a record.
Michael Volovic led the Greyhounds with 19 points while Crow-
ley had 14 and Ryan Cline 11. Zach McRoberts led the winners with
eight rebounds. Carmel held Cathedral to 36.7 percent shooting from
the field (18-of-49).
Coach Scott Heady’s Greyhounds, ranked No. 1 in the AP Class
4A poll, finished 25-2. It was a big week for the Heady family. Scott’s
father, Bob Heady, was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of
Fame.
Jalen Coleman led Cathedral with 15 points and Hall totaled 14.
Collin Barthel grabbed nine rebounds. Coach Andy Fagan’s Irish,
ranked seventh in the Class 4A poll, finished 25-6.
