Last Year’s State Finals in Review

Unbeaten Bedford North Lawrence Holds Off Fort Wayne South Side in 4A
The Bedford North Lawrence Stars capped an
undefeated season in stirring fashion, outlasting the
Fort Wayne South Side Archers, 54-51, in a closely
contested Class 4A girls basketball final.
In a game with five ties and 12 lead changes, the
Stars went ahead for good when Sammy Dillman
sank a 3-pointer from the corner with 1:20 remaining.
That provided a 51-48 edge and BNL closed out its
scoring by hitting three free throws.
A pair of sophomores, Alexa Bailey and Domi-
nique McBryde, led the Stars with 19 points apiece.
Bailey is the daughter of the state’s all-time leading
scorer and BNL assistant coach Damon Bailey.
Jenna Allen collected 11 rebounds for the Stars.
BNL’s girls were making their fifth appearance in
a state championship game. The title was their third
         (1983 and 1991).
South Side’s trip to the Hulman Center marked its
first appearance in the girls state finals. The Archers’
performance in the title game was dramatically dif-
ferent from their regular-season meeting against the
Stars, who won by 24 points in a January game at
         Bedford.
Ariana Simmons led the Archers with 21 points
and 11 rebounds in the title game.
Coach Kurt Godlevske’s Stars, ranked No. 2 in
the Class 4A ICGSA poll, completed the season at
28-0. Coach Juanita Goodwell’s Archers, unranked in
         the ICGSA poll, finished 24-4.
Shelton, Moore Lead Mt. Vernon to State Title
The Mt. Vernon Marauders wouldn’t be denied
this time. Sydney Shelton and Erica Moore made
         sure.
The Marauders, in their second consecutive
appearance in the Class 3A championship game,
         used Shelton’s 29 points and Moore’s 3A-record 15
rebounds to fuel a 61-47 victory over the Hamilton
Heights Huskies. Mt. Vernon fell to Fort Wayne
Concordia Lutheran, 42-39, in last year’s title game.
Shelton, the niece of Mt. Vernon coach Julie
Shelton and only a freshman, turned in a sterling
effort on the finals’ big stage. She hit 8-of-14 shots,
         including a 3A-record 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and
added four assists. Moore totaled 14 points to go
with her dominance on the glass.
Mt. Vernon, which lost a regular-season meeting
         to Hamilton Heights (70-61), opened a 24-point
lead with 5:10 left in the game. The Marauders
outshot the Huskies (46.3 percent to 34 percent) and Coach Shelton’s Marauders, ranked sixth in the
outrebounded them, 38-22. Class 3A ICGSA poll, finished 23-4. Coach Tod
The Huskies, making their first appearance in Windlan’s Huskies, ranked No. 2, ended at 23-3.
the girls basketball state finals, were led in scoring
by Kiley Walters’ 13 and Dakota Weatherford’s 12.
         Katelyn Rednour collected six rebounds.
