Blake Ress and Phil N. Eskew
Mental Attitude Awards
At the conclusion of each state championship game, the IHSAA Executive Committee, along with the Indianapolis Colts, will present the
Blake Ress or Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award to an outstanding senior participant in the football state tournament.
The recipients of this award, who were nominated by their principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and
athletic ability. The award is named in honor of Mr. Eskew, who served as the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s third commissioner from
1962 to 1976. Under his leadership, the IHSAA football state tournament was initiated in 1973. In 2015, the Mental Attitude Awards in classes A,
2A, and 3A were renamed in honor of Commissioner Emeritus Blake Ress, who served as the IHSAA’s seventh commissioner from 2000-2011.
The Indianapolis Colts, IHSAA corporate partner and presenting sponsor of the IHSAA football tournament, will present a $1,000 scholarship
to the school in the name of the recipient. Since 1989, over $840,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school
students in Indiana and we thank the Indianapolis Colts for helping carry on that tradition.
