Last Year’s State Finals in Review
Providence Sweeps to Back-to-Back State Championships
Top-ranked Providence rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Southwood
to capture its second consecutive Class 2A volleyball state
championship at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena.
With the 25-17, 25-14, 25-18 victory, the Pioneers (33-3)
extended their post-season win streak to 13 matches over
the last two seasons and haven’t dropped a set during that
stretch (39-0). It was also Providence’s third straight ap-
pearance in the 2A championship match and the third state
title in school history (2011 1A girls soccer).
Providence’s Jacquie Hornung led all players with 11 kills
followed by Marissa Hornung’s 10 and nine from Taylor Wil-
son. Patricia Mattingly assisted on 39 of those kills. Emilie
Harnish led unranked Southwood (26-14) with seven kills.
Southwood was making its fourth appearance in the state
finals, all in the last 11 years, and their second trip to the
championship match. Both times (also 2009) resulted in a
runner-up finish for the Knights who were coached by Tom
Finicle.
Wes-Del Sweeps to Second Class A Volleyball Title
Top-ranked Wes-Del lived up to its billing and swept Chris-
tian Academy of Indiana 3-0 for the IHSAA Class Volleyball
State Championship at Worthen Arena in Muncie.
The Warriors (35-3) of coach Biff Wilson carted off their
second volleyball state championship in four years by roll-
ing through the third-ranked Warriors of CAI, 25-22, 25-22,
25-13. It was the third straight top six team Wes-Del had
defeated.
Wes-Del’s Mariah Berry and Alysa Sutton led all with 10
kills each with Megan Clark chipping in nine. Kennedy
Petro tallied 34 assists and Sutton four service aces. Krista
Boesing and Sierra Rayzor led Christian Academy with
seven kills each.
Christian Academy (33-5), making the school’s first appear-
ance in any state championship event, was coached by
Walter Pauly. The Warriors won their first regional crown a
year ago and their first semi-state last Saturday.
