Last Year’s State Finals in Review

CATHEDRAL’S EARLY GOAL IS ENOUGH FOR THE 2A GIRLS TITLE

Thanks to an early goal, just 93 seconds into the game,
Indianapolis Cathedral escaped with a 1-0 victory over
South Bend Saint Joseph in the Class 2-A state champion-
ship game.

Despite being outshot, 22-5, the Cathedral defense and
goalkeeper Sophia Saucerman made the goal standup
as coach Marc Behringer’s squad claimed their first state
championship since 2009 and third overall. Cathedral won
its last eight games and finished 13-4-4 on the season.
The goal came after a scrum in front of the Saint Joseph
net. The ball went off the foot of Irish junior Maddie Wirth
and she was credited with the goal that got past goalkeeper
Kamryn Wieschhaus.

Saint Joseph, which lost a 3-1 decision to Evansville Memo-
rial in last year’s state title game, pretty much controlled the
action from that point, but couldn’t find the net. Saucerman
recorded eight saves en route to the shutout.

Coach Phil DePauw’s Indians came in with a 12-0-1 mark in
its previous 13 games and finish 16-6-2.

NOLL’S SECOND HALF GOAL SCORES FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP CHESTERTON SNARES FIRST TITLE WITH LATE WINNER

A single second half goal was all that was needed as Ham-
mond Bishop Noll claimed a 1-0 victory over Indianapolis
Cardinal Ritter for the IHSAA Class 2A Boys Soccer state
championship.

Sophomore Jake Wichlinksi snuck a beautiful crossing
pass through the Ritter defense and found classmate
Bruno Zamora in the box who drilled the ball to the back of
the net with 27:54 left in the match. It was Zamora’s 10th
goal of the year and gave Noll its first boys soccer state
championship.
The lone newcomers to this year’s state finals, the 14th-
ranked Warriors (20-2) completed the season on an eight
match winning streak including four victories over ranked
opponents. Noll was coached by first year leader Quinn
Cloghessy, a 2010 graduate of the Lake County school.
Cardinal Ritter (18-5-1), coached by Bashir Birany, settled
for a runner-up finish for the second time in four seasons.
