2017–18: Champions and Awards
Patricia Roy is regarded as a pioneer in girls’ athletics
nationally, as well as statewide, and she served on the
IHSAA executive staff as assistant commissioner longer
than anyone in the history of the Association. The
Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Awards for girls
basketball are named in her honor.
The Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award for wrestling is
named after the Association’s fourth commissioner (1976-1983).
The Mildred M. Ball Mental Attitude Award for
gymnastics honors the former assistant commissioner
who served at the IHSAA for 20 years.
The Ray Craft Mental Attitude Award for Class 1A
basketball honors the former assistant commissioner
of the IHSAA. The 2A, 3A and 4A awards are named after
Arthur L. Trester, the first commissioner of the
IHSAA (1929-1944).
The Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award for
boys track and field honors the Association’s very first
assistant commissioner.
The Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award for boys
golf is named after the longtime director or the IHSAA
Boys Golf Tournament.
L. V. Phillips was the second commissioner of the IHSAA
(1945-1962). All four Mental Attitude Awards for baseball
are named in his honor.
The contribution that each of these men and women have
made to high school sports in Indiana is immeasurable.
We honor them, thank them and strive to be worthy of
their extraordinary efforts.
