IHSAA Leadership
This entire report
is about IHSAA
leadership and
resisting the
temptation to look
too far ahead.
It is no small task to provide the calm, steady, inspired leader-
ship that is worthy of 160,000 student-athletes, 412 member-
schools and the association’s 117-year history during the best
of times. But the 2019-20 school year was unlike any other, and
the opportunity to serve it well required extraordinary effort at
every level.
The IHSAA leadership team was on call 24 hours a day
during the spring and summer of 2020. Communication with
government and health officials was constant. The temptation
to plan too far ahead was continually resisted. Instead, dozens
of contingency plans were formulated, vetted and repeatedly
revised. Options were constantly being evaluated. It was a
demanding time.
Regardless of the peculiarities of the year, being a member of
the IHSAA leadership team always requires a monumental
commitment of time, energy and thought. It is because of this
remarkable, annual commitment by the commissioner, board
members and executive staff that the IHSAA has become one
of the most progressive and universally respected state high
school associations in America.
Brent Duncan of the IHSAA Board of Directors awards a medal during
the Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals.
