Last Year’s State Finals in Review




                    BURRIS STREAK REACHES THIRTEEN YEARS

        Muncie Burris continued its winning tradition,
     taking home the school’s 13th consecutive state
     championship with a 25-9, 25-8, 25-16 victory over
     the Southwood Knights (33-6).  Last year’s state
     championship was the 21st overall for the Owls
     (40-0), who entered the match with a No. 2 national
     ranking in the ESPN Rise Fab 50 poll.
        The game saw only one lead change, while Burris
     stayed in control with a team hitting percentage of
     .333 to an opposing -.08.
        The Burris offensive attack was lead by the trio
     of senior Taylor Unroe, sophomore Taylor Morey, and
     junior Chelsea Toth, who were each credited with
     10 kills.  Both Unroe (10 kills, 10 digs) and Morey
     (10 kills, 13 digs) finished the night with double-
     doubles, while Toth totaled an impressive .600 hitting
     percentage.  They were helped by senior setter Allyson
     Morey who turned in a match high 37 assists.  Senior      Coached by Tom Finicle, the Southwood Knights
     Taylor Harnish also came up with 15 digs.  advanced to the championship match with an 18-25, 25-20,
        The Knights were led by junior Meghan Binkerd’s eight   25-23, 25-18 victory over the Fairfield Falcons.  Muncie
     assists and six digs, while senior outside hitter Mallory   Burris, coached by Steve Shondell, took a 25-14, 25-14,
     Harnish added 10 digs of her own.  Harnish was also the   25-9 victory over the Brownstown Central Lady Braves in
     recipient of the 2A Mental Attitude Award.  the other semifinal match.

            MARQUETTE CATHOLIC CLAIMS SIXTH STRAIGHT STATE TITLE

        Marquette Catholic (34-6) battled its way to the school’s
     sixth straight Class A state championship at Ball State’s
     Worthen Arena.  The 25-18, 25-10, 23-25, 25-19 victory over
     Wes-Del (28-8) was the Blazers’ ninth overall state title.
        Marquette Catholic cruised through the first and second
     sets, but Wes-Del picked up the third set win after battling
     through eight ties and five lead changes.  Marquette Catholic
     came out strong in the fourth set behind seniors Amber
     Cerrillos and Ashley Edmond.  With Cerrillos serving, the
     Blazers racked up seven straight points to open up a 17-10
     lead before closing out the match.
        Edmond, a key component of last year’s championship
     team, had a game-high 22 kills and 20 digs.  Cerrillos paced
     the Blazers with 40 assists, 12 digs, and five aces.  Junior
     outside hitter Katie Clancy contributed 11 kills and seven
     digs.
        Senior outside hitter Sacha Gill led the way for the
     Warriors with 10 kills and 17 digs.  Sophomores Marisa
     Mathews and Alexa Antrim recorded seven kills each, and
     senior Darcy Crabtree came up with 11 digs.  This was Wes-
     Del’s second appearance at the state finals, its first since
     1976 and the first time in competed in the championship
     match.
        Coach Troy Campbell and Marquette Catholic defeated
     the 2008 Class A runner-up and top-ranked Barr-Reeve
     (36-1), 22-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 in the semifinal.  Wes-Del,
     led by Biff Wilson, advanced to the state final by besting
     Indianapolis Lutheran (20-17), 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21.
