Last Year’s State Finals in Review
Yorktown completes perfect 28-0 campaign for Fifth State Title
After a slow start, No. 1 Yorktown completed its second
perfect season in the last three years by taking a 3-1
(16-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15) win over Munster in the Class
4A championship match.
Coach Stephanie Bloom’s Tigers saw the Mustangs come
out hot, hitting .361 as a team in the opening set as five
Munster players recorded at least two kills in the set.
It was all downhill from there for No. 3 Munster, however, as
the Tigers won set two by never trailing and won set three
also without trailing and being tied only once (at 5-5). In the
clincher, Yorktown scored the first nine points en route to
claiming the school’s fifth title overall.
The 28-0 Tigers also took the title in 2000, 2011, 2016 and
2018 when they were the last undefeated team (at 34-0) to
date to win a state title.
Yorktown had four players in double-digits with kills, led by
Ellee Stinson’s 12. She also had a match-best 31 digs.
Munster, which came in on a 26-match winning streak, got
14 kills each from Haley Melby and Lourdes Torres.
Coach Brett Boden’s Mustangs, who were making their first
state finals appearance since 1977, finished 32-3.
Bishop Dwenger rallies for First Volleyball State Championship
Behind a record-setting performance by junior Eva Hudson,
Fort Wayne Dwenger rallied from a two-set deficit to pull off
a 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 27-25, 25-15, 17-15) win over Brebeuf
in the Class 3A championship match.
Hudson recorded 33 kills to set a five-set match record,
previously held by Anna Logan of Indianapolis Bishop
Chatard, who had 20 kills in 2012.
The win for coach Tim Houser’s Saints marks the first state
title for the program, which last appeared in the state finals
in 1979.
After dropping the first two sets, Dwenger (33-2) fell behind,
14-9, in set three and saw the Braves serve for the match
at 25-24. However, a Kristin Bobay kill and a Brebeuf attack
error gave Dwenger a game-point, which Hudson put away
with a kill to keep the Saints in the match.
Dwenger dominated set four and looked to cruise in the
decisive set by breaking out to an 8-2 lead. Yet, Brebeuf
fought back for a 12-10 lead and eventually had two match
points, but couldn’t convert. Dwenger drew even at 15-15
on a service error and back-to-back blocks by Hudson and
Olivia Clark ended the match.
Coach Kathryn Haughs’ Braves (23-12) were led by Sydney
Robinson, who had 23 kills.
