2018–19: Unified Flag Football
The 22nd IHSAA Sport
It wasn’t just about Bedford North Lawrence’s
50-26 state championship victory over
Tippecanoe Valley High School. And it wasn’t
just about the football game played on a
60-yard long field with five players on a side at
the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center in
Indianapolis.
It was, however, about changing the culture at
32 Indiana high schools. It was about trans-
forming lives. And to quote Special Olympics
Indiana, it was about “unleashing the human IHSAA Champions Together Director, Lee Lonzo, was
spirit through the transformative power and presented with the third annual Richard G. Lugar
joy of sports.” Award for Distinguished Service to Interscholastic

The “joy of sports” was on full display on state championship game on March 23, 2019 at

Coupled with the six-year-old IHSAA Unified
Track & Field State Tournament, these
officially sanctioned championship events are
opportunities for student-athletes both with
and without disabilities to partner together in
the pursuit of athletic excellence, character
development and unity.
