The Story of Emma Wright
The date was
February 9, 2019.
Emma Wright, Hobart High School sophomore, had just won
the 100-yard freestyle event at the IHSAA Girls High School
Swimming and Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natato-
rium in Indianapolis with a time of :49.95.
What’s it like to be a high school state champion in Indiana?
“We had a police escort waiting for us when we got back to
Hobart,” explained Tomiko Wright, Emma’s mother.
“It was crazy!”
“It’s still a dream to me,” added the state champ. “Lights
flashing. Sirens blaring. Everybody was on the street with signs
and balloons. Little kids were waving. And my teammates and
the boys team were all in cars behind us.”
Emma Wright’s letter jacket is like a roadmap of her journey toward
consecutive trips to the IHSAA Girls State Swimming and Diving Finals
and one state championship. It’s also a memory bank from her four years
at Hobart High School that Emma and her family will treasure forever.
